The only thing I have on hand is pillow stuffing. What should I stuff them with? Also, besides lavender whats good in sachets?

Have you ever thought of sand, Nancy? I know that sounds weird, but one of my favorites is stuffed with sand (I believe they made a little "pillow" inside the pincushion), and it keeps the points of the needles sharp.
I also use hops and lemon verbena in sachets as well. |

Wool is great, I don't use polyester stuffing because it makes the needles rusty. I have a big bag of sawdust from my friend Michael that I'm going to use in my next ones. I also read somewhere recently that in Japan people use coffee grounds. Now that would smell good. I'm going to have to try that...I'm going to have to clean up my kitchen first. i think we have reached ground below zero here...
Yesterday I got a free copy of Shell Seekers by Rosamund Pilcher. I read it years ago, but I figure the F month is coming right up so i have to have a supply of things to read. The woman who runs the fabric shop near me always has a few free for the taking items at her store. What a nice idea. I had gone to get my mini apron material. Nancy Jo, you need to try the mini aprons sometime, I know you will find great things to do with them...

I bought a cute little pin-cushion last year at a local quilt shop and they said it is stuffed with ground walnut shells and I'm almost certain she said you can buy them at the pet supply. You can tell the pieces are nice and small inside, but have a good "weight" to them and I figure if that's what the ladies at the quilt shop are using it must be okay. (right?)

I have used sand. Like FebruaryViolet said, I make a smaller pillow and fill it with sand. Then stuff the pin cushion with the sand bag wrapped in wool. The walnut shell is good too. I was told that the shell will help your needles last longer. (Walnut shell is also good for removing paint from car parts.)

The best thing I found was steel wool... Find the fine grade when stuffing - it sharpens the needles and maintains the shape of the pincushion. If I had to pick next it is saw dust - also great for keeping the needles sharp but you must put in a little sack if the fabric you are using for the pincushion is not a tight weave. Next, is metal fillings but those are hard to come by.
Good luck and keep those pins in a cushion but off the couch cushion.

I have used kitty litter...fresh of course and I love it. I have also used walnut bird litter but I like the kitty litter better and it costs a lot less than the walnut bird litter. Have fun stitching.

My Levi is not quite two and you know how some kids can't resist putting things like that in their mouths..Boy did he gets a surprise.!!! He's been wiping his mouth off for hours now..LOL hugs
