When I was younger, my Dad gave me a hope chest. For those of you who aren't familiar with the phrase, it is a chest for putting the things in that you wanted to have for when you got married.Like mine had pillowcase, afghans, quilts, etc. For those of you who aren't married, what would you put in your hope chest? For those of you who are what did you put in there, and what would you have changed now that you've been married? I like to call mine the Hope of Starting Over Chest...lol. I have the chance to rebuild my things I put in there to use for the new house and our brand new beginning. I'd love to hear your stories so I can have ideas of what I want in mine. :)

| I have been married for 50+ years but in my hope chest I would have: Mamma's and Grandma's recipes, sewing patterns, family stuff that ment nothing to me then, but everything now. I know that the hope chest was for stuff to start your home like linens and things. But they all wear out and now years and years later, we wish we had some of the stuff that would last. |

I agree Belle, I would also add Photos of my parents & grandparents. A Quilt, A Dutch oven and good skillet. I think after 3 marriages I have everything I ever will need or have needed...too bad it took so long to get those things together.. I was married a total of 48 years.

I am not married yet. I don't have a hope chest but have recently been biulding a "Hope Drawer." It is the bottom drawer in the dresser of drawers at my Dad's house. In it I have a white porcelain serving platter, a china serving platter, three matching sets of silver plated coasters I picked up at an antique store, my aprons, a dish set, as well as some crocheted dishcloths that I made (I am working on more). I also have ready many cook books (including my favorite Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book). I need to get silverwear and make napkins and things like that now. :)

LOL!! When I was younger I had a hopechest too. I saw the idea in an USA mag and loved it. I bought towels and all the other smaller items I thought I needed in the THEN fave color........orange YIKES!! lol
BTW I don't have it anymore, but am still "hoping" lol

definitely family recipes(although I have a lot of my grannny's recipes now..it took me a number of years to collect them..wish I'd have had them when I had just married and didn't know a lick about cooking..it would have saved me a lot of troubles.

I remember my hope chest having in it a set of dishes, potholders, kitchen towels, salt and pepper shakers,a Better Homes and Garden Cookbook, some casserole dishes, some utensils,some linens and so forth like that.

I am working on a hope chest for my 2 girls and son. For my son who is already 26 I am looking for an old wooden tool chest to put things in. I have family ornaments that came over from Germany for each of them and recipes, I am also knitting lace stoles for each of them as a wedding gift and future christening wrap. There is alot of family heirlooms that have been in boxes while they were little and are needing to see the light of day again! I think my very 21st century kids need and I know they cherish the chance to touch the past.

| I started a hope chest (a cardboard box in my closet) back in the late 60's when I was in high school and I was going steady (no, I didn't marry him). The things that went in it were all the freebie gifts that the gas stations were giving away. Remember that? I had mugs, glasses, cheap steak knives...and then there was the china that my parents bank was giving. I still have some of that. Pot holders, dish towels anything free. Then for my high school graduation gift,I asked for Farberware pans. I'm still using those all these years later. I guess I've always been domesticated!! |

I am not married and inherited one of the three hope chests my mammy has (one was for my deceased cousin but I'll prob end up with that too eventually) Right now I have a few things for future kids, my deceased cousin's clothes and a few belongings, my deceased pap pap letters and cards, mums ring (they are divorced), and some other things that I keep meaning to organize, because now I have NO ROOM it doesn't truly shut, I want to take my cousin's clothes and make a quilt. Sorry that didn't sound too uplifting now did it :-p

I have been married 30 years now. When I first met my future hubby I had everything I owned in an old long wooden gun box. It was old when I got it and it was a gun box. I put everything I thought I would use when I moved up here. It had pots, pans, utensils, towels. It's been so long I don't remember everything in it. I do still have that box. It's been used as a coffee table, toy box and for storage. I love it. It's probably 60 years old now. And it fit perfectly on my old Pinto, too! That's all I had, the car and my box full of stuff.
