When I move into the new house, (exact date still in the air) I will have to make a BIG grocery shopping trip. Since, we are trying to get on our feet again, I don't want one of my biggest steps into the house to have to be groceries. So, I am trying to do a little collecting as I can now with things that will keep, but.....for when I do move in; what things would you say were essentials for a farmgirl's kitchen?
This doesn't include things like: toliet paper, diapers, personals, etc. This doesn't exclude:plastic wrap, freezer paper, etc....lol...okay, so this farmgirl is picky...lol
But really, What's a farmgirl kitcen mean to you?

hugs!

Well I was thinking about this a few days ago.. I love to cook and I love all the gadgets. I have lots of Glass jars too with labels printed & attached.( some include cooking instructions once you toss the packaging) for things like rice, different kinds of pasta, oatmeal, nuts, dry cereal, raisins, They look nice on the pantry shelf too, I can see exactly how much I have when it comes shopping time. I also have a food saver for vacuum sealing meat vegetables for freezing.

A farmgirl kitchen for mean is mking a wonderful meal with the basics and suprising the socks off of everyone!! I don't own a LOT of things in my kitchen, I do need a few more things but I can whip up something whith a skillet, medium pasta pot and deep saute pan. Add a small griddle and I can go to town. I must have lots of storage items because I double batch cooking. I also like double amounts of silverware, dinnerware and serving utensils. I like glass jars for pasta, rice, etc, like Cheryl and I like stainless steel appliances and I stick to pink, blue, lime and white in colors.

Good Luck on your move...

I try to make my kitchen as close to my grandmothers as I can and I figure that is the best way to go since to me my grandmother knew everything!!!

When I first got married she bought me a set of cast iron pans... this is the best present ever. If you cannot get a whole set, I use the dutch over, frying pan and rectangular griddle the most. My grandmother used to tease my husband those pans were for making a wonderful meal and if he forgot to thank me for that meal to clunck him in the head to remind him. She said no good irish woman was without cast iron and no irish man forgets to thank his wife...

I also suggest a good pepper grinder and whole peppercorns.

A cute, fun cookie jar that should never be empty.

A sharp paring knife, a pretty spoonula, metal tongs, slotted spoon, spatula, bread knife and a pretty container to keep them in.

Two cutting boards: one for veggies and one for meat.

An last but not least... an apron that makes you feel like a princess!!!

Have fun... my kitchen is my fav. place to be!!!

In my kitchen a cast iron frying pan is very important! I just bought another big one today at the thrift store for just $8.00.
The right spices, too. Good oils to cook with, like olive and safflower. Real butter! A good SHARP knife to peel with. A knife sharpener.

And what I have really grown to love and I use a lot of is whole nutmeg and a long grater. I use it in just about everything now.

Of course real fresh eggs and milk from my own goats helps, too. I almost forgot cutting boards. A good food processor, coffee grinder, good coffee.

I could go on and on, but might stop now. Have fun, Jessie. When's the move?

I did forget something. Pretty dishes makes a kitchen look happy. Pretty dishes and bowls and coffee cups. I love pottery and have a lot of it. So I like pottery mugs and bowls, too.

And a cookbook shelf with lots of cookbooks in a row within easy reach. And like Niki says, aprons. Hanging on a hook ready to be put on and used.

And flowers, too, in pretty vases. Very country farmgirl.

I also think a cast iron set is very important. I also use my cheese grater a ton for a variety of things. You'll need a whisk if you don't have an electric mixer. I also use my pizza cutter alot for cutting everything from pizza, quesadillas, and sandwiches. As for groceries, you'll need the basics of hamburger, eggs, flour, milk, beans, chicken, and a few seasonings such as salt, pepper and cinnamon just to start.

I also agree with the aprons! I get mine from www.marmeedear.com.

Blessings!

I agree with all of the above with an addition - a Foley Fork. These are no longer made but I think when they were at the height of production were made by the Foley Co.. They are a large metal, 6 or 7 tined fork. The tines are bent inward so it is spoon shaped, it is invaluable for mixing stuff up. I have found one at a thrift store and my mom gave me hers from the 70's for Christmas a couple years ago.

That's the one Heather - somebody in marketing must have figured out what an indispensible tool it is:) The shape is slightly different, I think if you could find an old one it would be better, but then I have been known to be slightly biased (no really, it's true!!) towards old stuff over new.

Dry measuring cups. 1 C, 2 C and the 1qt liquid measuring cups, measuring spoons, Wooden Spoons, A good Pyrex baking dish, cookie sheets, 2 round 8 in pans, 1 square 8 in pan, 1 9 x 13 in pan, a good set of nesting mixing bowls, pretty dish towels and pot holders, Those 3 tier wire hanging baskets( these are so handy for keeping fruit in or keeping things up high where little fingers can't find them), A good set of sharp knives, a manual can opener, a bottle opener, and a cheese slicer(these last 3 I didn't get right away and I kept needing them and forgetting to buy them). A grapefruit knife if you eat grapefruit, and grapefruit spoons(these 2 are hard to find). Glad press n seal plastic wrap( this stuff is awesome I use it all around the house), Jane's Crazy Mixed up Salt. Great on everything recommended by Paula Dean. Marshmallow Cream for making fruit dip (see Kitchen section under pantry challenge). Hope these help:)
Toodles,
Becky

OOoh I know the foley fork! I have been looking for one for years. My mom will not relinquish hers. My Great Gram used hers to serve spaghetti, it works so much better than a spaghetti grabber thing. I think the old one would be better than that new design, The tines are a little different. I am still holding out for an old one.
If you find one snatch it up.

I have to agree with the use of cast iron cookware. I absolutely love mine and use it everyday. I would also suggest a large stock pot for soups, chilis, stews, etc. Garlic is a must in my kitchen. A good meat fork, I use mine for roasts, to flip the bacon, check the potatos. OH! and wooden spoons, I would be lost without mine. :) And finally some pretty copper jello molds for on the wall.

Take care, Melissa.

I also have to agree with everyone above! I love my cast iron pans - we use them when we go horse camping and in the house on the wood stove! Also acouple nice mixing bowls - I have my moms old ones, all different fun colors! I can't live without my cutting boards and knives (mine aren't the best and were getting dull and dh got me a knife sharpener for Christmas!) - this is a tool I wish I had a long time ago!!

Yes, I agree with the cast iron pans and large mixing bowls. I also use a hand grinder that I mounted on the counter...I use it for veggies and meats and jams and well you get the picture. It is really a time saver and I just love it.And be sure not to forget your aprons!!!

I wouldn't say this is "essential", but it sure is fun...I got some money for Christmas from Mom and I knew immediately what to use it for - www.napastyle.com has antique flatware by the pound. I bought enough service for about 16, I think, and couldn't be more happy with what was delivered. It's not true silver, but it has such character and beauty and is all mixed and NOT matched. It comes in place settings of knife, large fork, small fork, large spoon, small spoon. You can get as little or as much as you like. We are using it for every day and it sure does add grace to every little morsel!

That sounds wonderful KJD. They say the proper setting just has matching flatware and it doesnt have to match the rest of the table..;) I think I am going to have to look into that! Thanks for sharing the site.:O)
