I don't know about the rest of you, but, my man is laid off from his job until March(maybe)....
I posted on "how will you welcome....", just thought I would like to encourage you...
When we heard that yesterday was his last day, we were sort of discouraged, but, then both of us looked at each other and said, things could be worse, we still have a cellar and freezer full of canned gods and frozen food, those that love us, good health, each other and a roof over our heads, What else could we ask for?
How about the rest of you, how are you coping with your man being laid off from his job?
I love hearing from others who are in the same boat, and learning....

HI Terri,
Well, you could say my guy has been "laid off" since last June. We had some major changes, and he hasn't had a job since then. I love your perspective on things. It is a learning process to be creative and make things stretch. We too are VERY thankful for those who love us and have been helping us make it along the way. :)
We have high hopes for this month, that God will graciously provide him with a job. We know that He is watching out for us, and that He has great plans, now, if we just diligently wait, it will all work out.:O)
With the two little ones, it has been quite the interesting experiences, but I think it has helped us to really see the necessary versus the frivilous. :)
In everything that happens that seems bad to us, there is good even if its a small kind of good. THat good is our hope that it will get bigger!
hugs,

Jessie

My husband was forced to retire 6 years ago.. after quadruple bypass surgery and a stroke..( due to years of smoking) sorry had to say that..He was only 50. We tightened our belt and sold our house & moved to Arizona. I worked there and we decide we had had enough, I retired from my job two weeks before we sold our home, I was working in an extremely stressful job...helping women make choices after abuse and leaving with thier kids to freedom. I learned a lot from them.. We had so much more than some so we decided to move back to the PNW. We were lucky to sell after the house was on the market for 14 months. We were guided to Klamath Falls to our one acre farm..Things happen for good from bad. Hang in There.. You can make your life what you want. Be patient and love each other. Good luck to you all.

My Husband was let go on November 24th. We have always saved for a rainy day. So as long as the roof doesn’t leak and the plumbing doesn’t burst, we should be ok for a year. But of course i pray he find a job before that.
His unemployment has not kicked in yet and my company gave out no Christmas bonuses this year.
But like Terri says, we have each other. We will do what needs to be done.
It is getting harder for all of us.
I would love to win the lottery. (Oh, I guess I should play it once in a while)
Lets just pray that 2009 brings us all good fortune.

My fiance's lay off yesterday was not the first one we have dealt with in a year. Actually, it is the third. His five year contract ended last December. He got a job a couple months later which he held for 6 months. This past job only started on December 1st, so it lasted only a month. We are now nearing the end of his unemployment benefits.

I cannot work due to health reasons, but my doctor's won't support disability because I'm "too young" and college educated. So, I have been busy crocheting and sewing trying to bring in at least a little bit of money to help out. I have not been very successful as yet, but I will be opening an etsy store within the next couple of weeks.

We lean on each other, get help from friends and family when offered, visit the local food pantries, and simply be strong for each other. I have never been in a situation where things were not tight, so I know we will get through this and be able to laugh later. Like some others have said, you really learn what you need and what you do not when things get tight. The most important are your loved ones and the smiles that they can bring to your faces even on the hardest days.

My husband is a truck driver. It's really good one week and the next two are very bad. But we make it eventually. In the past he would be laid off several times. Once was for over a year. He just started a lawn mowing business. We had the kids help during summer and weekends and built up quite a good business. He was not one to sit around waiting for something to happen. He'd go start something up.

He is 60 now and would love to retire at 65. But there's no way yet. I need to learn a way to support us if anything ever happened to him. I don't know if we could make it at farming with just 3 acres. Although that's what I'd really love to be able to do with the rest of my life.

So who knows what the future holds for any of us. We just need to be prepared for it when the time comes. I am so sorry there are so many who are going through hard times now. But like you said, Terri, you have so much food and good health and a roof over your heads and most importantly, each other. You will make it. March is only 3 months away. Something better could be around the corner.

Sending you good wishes and good thoughts for a good year for you both. You'll be in my prayers, too.

My husband is a truck driver too....owner operator and his work has pretty much dried up over the last 3 months. He's not one to sit around either. He's been out working on people's vehicles and equipment, plowing lots and driveways to clear snow. Now I'm working another job--I'm a nurse so at least I can find plenty of work but there are only so many hours in a day and only so many days in a week. I pray for us all.

My husband's job is very secure. He works with mentally retarded people, and most of the company's programs are funded by social security and the state. Unless NY gets really desparate (and it could happen) they probably won't do away with services for the disabled. The downside, of course, is that he doesn't make enough to support us both (or a family).

Now, MY job, on the other hand, is going to be outsourced to India starting in March. So I have a lot of decisions to make in the next few months! I'm trying to save, but I'm also trying to get as much done around the house as I can while I still have money coming in. And I'm looking into going back to school. What's a good career, other than health care or education, that doesn't require a lot of physical strength and can't be done from another country? Any suggestions?

Amie-

You could study to be an accountant. That is what I am doing and while it offers a few challenges it isn't too terribly hard and that is one job that people will always want to have right there! It's also a growing field and most colleges have a 100% *or close enough to it* graduate hire rate. Some colleges even have what amounts to a waiting list of companies that want their graduates!

Thanks, Alee. I've never been good with numbers, so I'm not sure how well that would work for me. But I'm looking into most everything.

One thing I'm seriously considering is getting a paralegal certificate. That's supposed to be a growing field as well. And there will always be folks suing each other!

Anybody have any knowledge in that field?

Amie, Consider something in the health field - it is very secure. There are all kinds of jobs besides the obvious, doctor or nurse, such as administration, insurance filing, all kinds of technical jobs such as x-ray, ultrasound, ekg, mammography, radiology, operating room technicians, the list goes on and on.

My husband's company laid 5 people off at the end of the year. The facility employed about 50. My husband's position is in tact, but his sister, who was in sales, was laid off. She is making the best of it and is going to get her real estate license while looking for additional work.

Knowing that God is in charge and that He can bring good from what seems to be bad is so important.

Ladies, This is a very bad time. And with family and friends I am sure we can get through it. But yes we need money to pay bills. We have good friends that live close and family that is about 2 hrs away. If it comes down to it they will move here to the farm and help here. we are going to the local animal auction this week and see how things go with that...I have never been to one. But Dh and my friends DH is going together. It seems that cows are going cheap. And if grass fed we can have a nice stock of beef in the freezer. I love canning and my friend has 10 green thumbs...she is helping me..my thumbs are not so green. I will be thinking about all the people that have lost there jobs. And praying that something breaks soon
Deborah

we have moved to our farm...and love it
