>> << Ok...so reallly early this morning, I was laying in bed, half awake, half asleep, when I realize the phone is ringing. Now, mind you, this is at 1:45, not an hour that most people get phone calls. 'Cept the nasty ones that everybody loathes, hates and can Not tolerate.

So, for lack of any sense, I shout to Tom, "The Phones Ringing!!", like it's not obvious...I jump out of bed, run to the kitchen (our old phone in the bedroom died a sad and terrible death..) grab the receiver...and hear just breathing.

Now I don't know whether or not to be angry, I'm already scared, 'cause I'm thinking it's just Horrid News..and then I hear this very, very drunk voice say, "Hiii.." I ask, "Who is this, please?!" Then I hear another slurred sentence, that says, "Hi...is youuurr refri'gerater runninggg?"

I am happy to say that who ever designer our phone, has it built to withstand some smashing into it's holder..as that is what I did immediately after I heard this drunk slurr into our phone. I didnt know whether or not to laugh, cry, scream, just What To Do.

So I marched back to bed. Mumbling. Tom asked half asleep, "Who was that?" I took a breath, an' said, "Some drunk woman, wondering if our refrigerator was running..." He just went back to sleep..

Why do these things happen? And why does it always seem like I'm the one (you can put yourself in this question..) who it happens to??!
~~ Just a question for the day..

I think this why I have an answering machine...You can always call back the caller if they leave a message or not. I used to jump at the first ring to answer on two.. *Drilled in me at work* Then I remembered I am Retired and My kids would never call me without leaving a message.

We screen if we don't know the number. Also we have those phones that play a tune for whoever you have programmed so I know the people that call us the most and are most important to us their rings.

Ohh..great idea! -- kinda like a no-brainer, but I just haven't had the time to program in a "people we know" kinda thing into our phone. I guess I'm waiting to see whether or not the phone in the kitchen lasts longer than 3 months..LOL!

As for the drunk lady.. ... well, she has more problems than I wanna know about! Ack! Puts things into some kind of perspective, I guess!

I'll check with our phone Co. to see what they have available for our phone line, so I don't have to hope out of bed at 1:45 ever, Evah again!!

I have an answering machine (with the generic message) and caller ID. I not only hate those prank calls in the middle of the night but those that call me in the middle of the day. I too just let the answering machine pick up the calls from callers I don't know and I will either pick up if I need to answer or call them back. The best thing about the answer machine is I can always delete.

If you have *69 on your phone you can it traces the call and you can report it to the phone company that a certain phone number has called you at late hours prank calling.

I had this happen last month, in the middle of the night on my cell phone, which is strange, because NO One really has that number. It was around 11:30 and I just drifted off to sleep. I answered, groggily, and heard a desperate "Where the H*** have you been?" I was like " Apparantley, not with you." (Thank goodness for a quick wit, though still half asleep.)All I heard was a BIG pause and then "Sorry, ummm...wrong number." CLICK!!! HA!!! : )

My Mammy 82 years young mind you keeps getting calls on her cell and texts saying why haven't you replied. Well FINALLY she did and said well I'm replying but I don't think it's who you wanted. lol

IDK I welcome those semi annoying but often amusing moments in my life. I've had interesting telemarketers. We have a family joke between mum and I about this one that had a deep manly voice and then said bye bye in a high squeaky tone and we called it a bye bye.

Has anyone ever read/heard of Thurber's story on the Sympathizer and how the guy called the phone company and heard about the sympathizer?

This reminds me, we used to call stores and ask if they had Prince Albert in a can. This was way back when you could buy Prince Albert Tobacco in a can. They would say yes and we would say, Let him out. This was about 60+ years ago. Not funny now.

It also reminds me of the one obsene phone call I received. I told the caller that what he suggested sounded interesting but first he had to take me to dinner at a really nice place and some really nice wine. Flowers and candy would be nice too. Anyway, after I listed all my conditions, He hung up on ME!

When my sister and I were little, one evening the phone rang, and she picked up the phone. The caller said, "Well, you sound like a nice little girl." She hung up and said to my mom, "I just got an obscene phone call!" At that moment the phone rang again and my mom quickly picked it up and was ready to read the riot act to whoever it was....well, it was my grandfather and he was laughing so hard he could hardly talk. I guess he just didn't realize how it might sound!

oook. i scan my calls with caller id, but i will admit here that I have done this kind of calling too..in my "sowing wild oats" days. ;) Of course, I wasn't drunk and I usually hit speed dial so I knew it was someone who knew me.
Sorry you have to be awakened by this oat sowers! :O) Thank goodness it wasn't a real emergency. You shoulda said no, my fridge isn't, but my nose is....got a tissue? (eww...lol)

This reminds me of my little Grandma. Long before caller id.
If one would call her, after a minute or so of "Hi-How are ya's"
one would usually get a response of:
"Hang on, let me get a cigarette."

Soooo, one evening she gets an obscene phone call. However, at first it didn't register that it was pervert calling. A delayed reaction.
So during the delay, she had said to him, "Hang on while I get a cigarette."
He hung up on her. We still chuckle over it.

These stories are too funny. I haven't had a prank caller in many, many years. I want to read more smart come-backs!
