I am struggling with getting rid of our cable/satellite. I know there is so much to do other than watch tv. I mainly watch it at night or the morning shows while I'm doing something. I'm not rearranging my life for television I have dvr and use it. The main cable channels I watch are BBCamerica, TLC, Discovery, E!, and on occasion mtv or bet (yes just save the lecture :-p) I think it hinders our communication, I know I tend to look forward to it, I am tired of the crappy commercials talking about male anatomy and how to please a woman with ky and that's not kentucky. I also toy with the idea of tivo which would mean buying it and then buying the liftime cost so I wouldn't pay each month. I am just in a crack about this and don't know what to think or do. I am afraid I'd be like oh noooooo or to be pleasantly surprised. OH i forgot CNN I enjoy as well. I must say I'm more addicted to the internet than the tv. lol

You can catch a lot of episodes online now. If I miss LOST for some insane reason, I watch it the next day online.

I'm in the same boat you are, Bridget. The hubs and I are tossing back and forth whether or not to ditch the Dish. I don't watch the TV in the daytime, but there are shows I like at night- House, NCIS, Pushing Daisies, and others. I do try and catch them online and think that may be the best way to go. Really, why am I paying $65 a month to watch an hour or so of TV at night? It would certainly prevent my son from watching WWE on Mondays and Fridays too!lol

I know what you mean! Every once in a while I think about what it would be like with no TV - which in my case is a completely rhetorical question because my husband and 3 sons would never never never (!) go for it. But, other then a few shows (Karin - I'm totally addicted to House!), I hardly ever watch it, and I agree with you, boehmiangel - I think it definitely hinders communication and way reduces family time. One of the things that I love to do is play board games (or card games, or whatever) with my family. We do that a lot when we take our camper out because I put my foot down and said NO tv in the camper! It's definitely for family time. And we really do have so much fun doing that (playing games, I mean).
And I so much agree with you about the commercials! Do the Victoria's Secret commercials bother anyone else? I think they're like soft porn, but maybe I'm old fashioned. (Well, I know I am old fashioned, actually!) But I hate when they come on - I find them embarrassing to look at and I certainly don't think they're appropriate for my teenage boys! Or 11-year old, either, for that matter.

I am waiting for my 8yo neice to ask what a Whopper Virgin is. We got rid of Sattelite TV over a year ago and never looked back. Are the shows you are watching worth $780.00 a year? We bought an antenna and put it up added a digital converter box and receive 21 channels on a good day. Yeah sometimes we have problems getting channels (because we are in a canyon) but I am not paying for my TV. Also we get all of the major networks, and I watch House and Bones too. Sometimes my 17yo complains, but thats life!

Viagra, KY his and hers, tampons, maxi pads, virgin unless virgin mary (call ME old fashioned) and sex stuff on so many shows especially gossip girl (I watch it but I'm 26)

Bridget, we're at the point of getting rid of DirecTV. It's now just a matter of timing as I want to have high-speed internet before we let go of the satellite. I'll miss the Hallmark movie channel, Planet Green and some others but (1) I just don't watch it that much and (2) when I do I end up getting sucked in and other more important things don't get done. It's just my husband and me and he's all for getting rid of it. I just don't want to be without local channels either online or TV. Like Lillian said, is it worth the $$ your spending every year for it? We figure if we get high-speed (it will probably be a card for the laptop), we can get rid of our internet service. Since that's the main reason we have a landline we can get rid of that too. Plus ditching the satellite TV. That would cut out $120 a month. Add back on $60 for the card and we still come out $60 ahead - $720 a year. These days, that's a lot of $$$.

God bless -

Hows that card work, I've toyed with that. That could be an option for me. I love to go places and ALWAYS have internet.....We have wireless at home right now. Hmmm I think I could deal with getting rid of the directv as well. i know E! BBCAmerica and others are on the internet. hmmm I want local channels for sure! Don't you wish you could pay for JUST the channels you want a la carte and for how many months like summer I don't need tv!

I agree on the commercials. We mostly get TV for the baseball, and I want to know why sporting events are the appropriate time to talk about "erectile disfunction" - this is the middle of Sunday afternoon. What next?

I lived alone without television for nine years. It was the healthiest, most productive time of my life. I have been married for two years now and we have cable with the DVR and 1 year old daughter. I've been trying to get my hubby to agree to get rid of the TV. I'm just as bad about watching it. We don't let our little one watch, but she laready understands how the remote works. I know it's so easy to "relax" at night with the TV, but I would rather read or talk to my husband or do something. It certainly would be nice to be rid of that bill. When I lived without TV I went to the local bar if I wanted to watch sports and a friend hosted TV nights for her friends like me without TV on the popular show nights (like West Wing.) That was fun because it made TV more social or like a special treat. I think everyone should have some time without TV. You might be surprised how much you like it or you can always get it back if you really miss it.

My sis has never had TV. She's a movie buff and we both have a large selection of good movies we watch over and over. I still have Directv mainly for DD because some of her classes assign news, political or science programs to watch. I plan to get rid of it after she goes off to college.

I am with the last few ladies here. We ditched TV for good 2 years ago. Before this, we had it sitting around, literally collecting dust. We watch everything online, including the election night coverage. We just don't have time in the big city, to sit down for it, and even if I did, I think there are more productive things I could do.

We have Directv. Also DVR. I love dvr! Means no commercials for me unless something catches my eye. For every hour show, you only get 40 minutes of that show. Saving 20 minutes on every show is wonderful! I have my favorites, but w/dvr can watch on my time. When DH lost his job we scaled back on everything, but tried to keep everything as close to normal as we could. We called to change our plan to the lowest they had been advertising. They told us that we couldnt do it because it was for new customers. (we've had them @ 12 or 13 years). Dh told them well then I guess we will have to get rid it. They werent willing to do it when we said we needed to cut back because of our situation, but it was suddenly ok once we said we would disconnect. Its a family plan & I think @$30 a month. That of course doesnt include taxes or fees for the dvr, but they can do it if you really want to keep it. I would love not to have it. I know it would free up more time for me. Its a source of relaxation for me after working all day, but I'm sure I'd do some of the things I have been meaning to w/o it. Just have to convince the DH & DK's!

I like TV. But, I don't have the Dish or any kind of cable. We are 1800 feet from the main road, we have to houses back here, but, the cable company said there had to be 3 houses on our driveway. I laughed and said well I will run right out and build another so we can have cable, NOT!!! We have an antenna. It is all I have ever had. We got a box. I just can't justify spending all the money on the cable anyway. I see my daughters and there doesn't seem to be that much on it that I like. The only thing I would like to have cable for is to have a lot faster computer than with the dial up.
