Got my first ever black eye yesterday. Was closing a shift door in one of our animal barns. On this door for part of the handle is a rounded piece of very heavy metal that is suspended on a pulley/cable apparatus. When I released the handle, it slowly swung back and hit me on the eyebrow. Instantly it raised a pea sized welt I could see from the top of my eye. In just a few minutes, the swelling spread and I got a bruise that fit neatly on my eye between the eye lid and brow. Looked like really bad 80's makeup in fuscha, purple and black. no kidding
This morning thanks to gravity, it's starting to creep down and is a little bit into both corners of my eye in an upside down u shape.
I'd love to slather a little comfrey salve all over this, but don't want further eye irritation.
This is fascinating so I'm taking sequential pix and will post on my facebook account as soon as I get a few days off. By then it shoud be under my eye and look really gnarley
sick huh? |

So, let me see if I've got this straight...the blood that's pooling under your skin to form the bruise is slowly sliding downward around your eyesocket?!! That's so gross. And yet kind of cool too. I can't wait to see the pics! Might as well make the most of the experience, right? I hope it doesn't hurt too much. |

Oh, dear. I am so sorry! Try arnica tablets. I had a black eye last year at this time and I took four tablets a few times a day and it did not last as long as I thought it would. (Only a week as opposed to the three I thought.) You can get them at the health food stores and it's pretty cheap. Good luck!!

And duuh it never occurred to me to use a piece of meat for the swelling??? oh well. Hate to see good meat go bad and I didn't have time to sit still. |

And so far I only had a little discomfort yesterday. Felt like a sinus headache coming on, but was connected to the bruise. It's still a little tender too. Not where the handle hit, but more near the corner of my eye |

Hope you're feeling (and looking) better soon. I'm so glad you didn't hit your eyeball. You were lucky. I did that chasing a calf through some trees and whacked my eyeball with a small branch. Couldn't open my eye for days, it hurt so bad. Finally had to go to the eye doc. But all was fine.
I bet you got all kinds of comments on this one.

Yea, the facebook posts and comments were good.
And I wear hard contact lenses, so a direct hit on my eyeball would have REALLY painful!!
I have also been thwacked in the eye while walking in the woods. The small wippier branches are painful enough on an arm or leg, nevermind you eye!!!! |
