over on my blog, yep I blogged about my pickle, whats the world coming to. I also got a picture of my aluminum tree. You know last year I would not have even dreamed of putting that tree up, but this year I did. I have to thank Mary Jane for loving those things that I thought I could never like again. Oh I had my favorite old things but this aluminum tree takes the tinsel.
How about you all, have you changed your taste in decorating and other things that you put away but could not throw away and now you like em? How about those white elephants you toss in the closets, have you brought them out and said YES that will work?

What a great read! I loved reading about your Christmas day. I love your tradition of finding the pickle, too. What fun for everybody.
And in your final paragraph: "just enjoyed the Day after Christmas and thanked God for all His Blessings and the Birth of His Son Jesus that brings us Pure Love." Amen!

Linda-We had an aluminum tree when we were kids and I loved it! We also had a live tree every year also. I sure wish mom & dad didn't get rid of that aluminum tree years ago, because I would have loved to have had it.
Love your pickle tradition! I think I want you to adopt me! LOL

WE do the "Pickle" thing too! Although, I have to admit-- this year I FORGOT!! My kids (3 teenage boys!) were a bit disappointed and I felt TERRIBLE-- but I got over it quickly (LOL!!)
All in all-- and despite my gloomy NON-Christmas-y mood this year--- we had a very nice Christmas.

Its fun to see others that do the pickle "ahem" shepherdgirl, I'm with the boys on this year not hiding the pickle.
I changed my title, to Christmas Pickle , cuz it sounds better, instead of just a plain ol pickle,lol.
heres a bit of history
Here's the pickle "legend" ( attached to the Glass Pickle Ornament)
"A very old Christmas eve tradition in Germany was to hide a pickle [ornament] deep in the branches of the family Christmas Tree. The parents hung the pickle last after all the other ornaments were in place. In the morning they knew the most observant child would receive an extra gift from St. Nicholas. The first adult who finds the pickle traditionally gets good luck for the whole year." This Christmas pickle story, with a few minor variations, can be found all over the Web and in print inside the ornament package. It says that Germans hang a pickle-shaped glass ornament on the Christmas tree hidden away so it's difficult to find. The first child to find it on Christmas morning gets a special treat or an extra present.
Background legend/story
A descendent of a soldier who fought in the American Civil War, John Lower (Hans Lauer?), born in Bavaria in 1842, wrote to tell about a family story that had to do with a Christmas pickle. According to family lore, "John Lower was captured and sent to prison in Andersonville, Georgia. ...In poor health and starving, he begged a guard for just one pickle before he died. The guard took pity on him and found a pickle for John Lower. According to family legend, John said that the pickle-by the grace of God-gave him the mental and physical strength to live on. Once he was reunited with his family he began a tradition of hiding a pickle on the Christmas tree. The first person who found the pickle on Christmas morning would be blessed with a year of good fortune."
I also read that the pioneers heading out west took pickles along, they didn't have fresh fruit so the pickles helped them from getting scurvy (sp).

Hi Linda,
I too hide a glass pickle in my white tree.
I have asked both my Mother (who is from Heilbronn-Central-Germany) and papa Horst (who is from Lubeck-North- Germany) about the pickle & both say they have never heard of this tradition...the peppermint pig yes, but not the pickle. That being said, it could be a regional tradition. But either way, I love the tradition and continue to place my glass pickle in the Christmas tree.
I also took the time to view your entire blog, what a wonderful journey I had. Thank you for sharing it.
I'll be coming back to see what other camping mischief you are up to.

I always have a pickle ornament for my grandbeasties to find on Christmas eve. My grandson got so good at finding it and the rest of the grandbeasties didn't stand a chance at it, so I had to find a really smally pickle for him,lol. I always have a special present for which ever one finds it first.

I love your pictures Linda. I have a close friend from Berlin, Germany who moved here 8 years ago. I asked him about the German "pickle" on the Christmas tree tradition. He had no idea what I was talking about! He asked his parents about it & they never heard of it either. I guess there is a man in Germany who makes these pickle ornaments & sells them to the U.S. only! My friend actually researched this & gave me the website about the man who makes those ornaments.
