Girls, I need your help!!! My hubby is trying deperately to shop for me for Christmas.. I am VERY thankful that I have such a caring guy, but he just looks SOOO lost that I try to give him little hints here & there. Well, I have been wanting to try to learn to sew & BELIEVE me I am so challenged. I have an old Singer that was my Grandma's, (needs some help) but I want something small & non-fussy that can just do a basic stitch or so. Can you gals give me some ideas.?? My sis has one that cost a fortune that she had to take classes to learn how to use.. Not for me.. I just want something to be able to hem a few things & not have to resort to my sorry hand stitching...

Hi Lisa,
I got my good faithful sturdy sewing maching as an anniversary present last year. It is a Brother and DH got it at Walmart. We didn't get the cheapest on which was like $60.00 but we got the next one up. Really simple. Couple of stitches manual button holer, NON-DIGITAL. (I hate the machines that can do everything for you)
Anyways, as much as everyone seems to hate Walmart, Id say thatd be the best place if youre looking for something like mine. :)

Ok...I posted to this but something happened...
What I said was, "how about emailing Wilma?" Personally, I have an Elna--it was $200.00, good for basic sewing but would take on denim and heavier fabric (when I had these BIG dreams)...but it's never been out of the box... |

Hey Lisa as you know I have many sewing machines, Like Katmom I am addicted, This is my advise find you a good Sears or Singer made in the late 50s or 60sIn fact the man that does my repairs might have something. Another thing it really is what you are going to be using it for , I do kinda production work so I have to have a tough machine

Lisa, I am a huge singer fan. I have 4 trusty singers. Everything from a treadle to the newest which is nearly 13 years old. You can get them very basic up to way to fancy. I use the one that is 13 years old the most often to do quilting, make aprons and mend. The thing I like most about them is that they are easy to do basic maintance on. You can purchase them nearly everywhere.
I have never used the brother machines but I have heard both good and bad about them. Which ever type of machine you decide on just be sure to know if it has a warranty for at least a few months to a year.

Have you heard of freecycle.org? You can join chapters in your area. It's totally free, people post offers of items they want to give away and wanteds for things they want to have. I picked up a very nice sewing machine from a woman who offered one. It's just a thought, and the price is right!

I have a $100 Singer that works great. Before that I had another Singer and before that another Singer...I have a very old one (Singer too) for backup that my Great Aunt gave me.
I always feel like if it can zig zag and backstitch and is comfortable then that is good enough for me. I like that zig zag mending stitch too. I never have really felt the need for a fancier or more expensive machine...I can do all I want to do on my trusty Singer.
I hope you get just what you want for Christmas!!!

I got mine from K-mart a few years ago. I had to look at the box that it's still in to see what kind it is. It's a Kenmore. I don't know if anyone else has ever used one but it's a little portable type. Very lightweight. I am not a sewer and I cannot figure it out. I know it's the simplest thing in the world, but not to me. I need to take lessons. But it's cute and will look really good sitting on my sewing table when I get it all cleaned off next year! That's my new years resolution: clean up and throw out. It was just $60. How sweet that your hubby asked. Mine did, too. I told him I wanted a wheelbarrow. We'll see!

Thank you so much for all of your input. I want to learn to sew SOO bad; my sis is good at it, but we rarely see each other. I am so motivated by my sweetie farmgals miss wilma & Aunt Jenny. I will see what happens at Christmas, & then try to take a closer look at my old Singer. I am sure it is OK, but I guess I was kinda looking for something really small cause I don't really have a good spot for a full size one.

I have a pre WWII Pfaff that I picked up at a garage sale for $30, took it to the sewing machine shop and had it serviced for $30 more dollars and it is a gem, the best machine I have ever sewn on except for my treadle machine. Lisa if you have a community college near you they sometimes have adult education classes in sewing( and a lot of other things) and they are really cheap to take. You might look into that.

OK you guys, Jim & I just FINALLY celebrated our Christmas tonight & he DID get me a machine. It is a Brother. It is not the smallest, but the next size up, still smaller than my older Singer, but I should be set between the two. This should be good for smaller things & if I have anything heavy duty, I will have to get some work done on the old Singer I suppose. I told hubby that if I couldn't figure it out, I would take it back & then we'll go from there. I REALLY am challenged in the how to operate a sewing machine area.
Thanks to all of you guys for your help, & miss wilma, you have me intrigued with your old machines that you are able to find, but I guess for now I am set. Hubby is so sweet, he really put some thought into Christmas this year. He is a keeper. |
