Ok, do you hide.. for future use? I will admit I do hoard a supply of TP. Yep I keep at least 24 rolls stashed. One time I had 104 rolls.. well they were on sale...so I bought!

I try to buy one extra of just about everything...that way when I get close to the end, I can know that I'm still 'covered' till I can get to the store...

I really like Costco. Costco is my friend. Why buy one can of beans when you can have 24? LOL There is nothing better than the "full pantry" feeling when you realize you have to store things in unorthodox places because there just isn't a spare square inch on the shelf! LOL

I prefer to use the word prepared rather than hoard. You only are hoarding when you buy the last 24 cans of beans and there ins't enough to go around. I was accused of hoarding when I did my Y2K preps. Fortunately, there was plenty of everything and we did not have to depend on our stash. But I have always kept a good quanity of the things we use on a regular basis. That is being prepared. A couple of winters ago, we had a foot of snow. (Hey that is a lot for us) We didn't go down the drive for a couple of days then our son came with his big truck and broke a path. Anyway, I ran out of 1/2 and 1/2 for my coffee. The first thing I bought when we went to the grocery store was some powdered coffee creamer for my stash.
I just counted and I have 52 rolls of toilet paper. We have a pantry in our big bathroom and I keep it full of paper products. The celler is full of canned goods and I have a pantry in the kitchen that's full. We have a fridge and 2 lg freezers in the shop that are full. Most of our neighbors know we are "prepared". They also know we have a big supply of ammunition. In this time of uncertainty, I think is is wise to store as much of everything that your budget and room will allow. |

I agree with you Belle, with the exception of the ammunition. I don't own a gun. Not to start a gun debate or anything. I actually would have one, but I have Miss Lauren, and she would want to touch it etc. Well, it would probably end up with an ER visit at the very least.  She can't help herself! I don't have candles around the house for the same reason.
I am guilty of the TP thing especially.
When I was a kid we used to run out regularly, so we had to use paper towels, napkins or kleen-x or what have you.
I always wondered why and thought my Mom was too lazy to go to the store.
Looking back, when I was really young, perhaps they didn't have the money and had to wait until pay day to buy more. When I was older, it was probably because they both worked full time, and she didn't have time to drop everything and run to target.
So now I keep a minimum of twelve rolls on hand, plus whatever package is open.
I have also really stocked up on everything we use to keep on hand and be prepared. A little extra of this here and there really adds up!
Does anyone stash some cash on hand for the same reason you stash food and necessities?
I have started to do the cash thing a little bit. Not much though, the kids have radar and always seem to know when I have an extra few dollars on hand.

I do this now to cut down on trips to the store and because I can afford to - there have been times in my life when money was very tight and we ran out of TP, laundry soap, toothpaste, contact solution, deodorant, etc. all the same week - that can be tragic when you are living paycheck to paycheck!! I don't ever want to do that again so....

That reminded me of the book I bought last year,"THE PANTRY" its history and modern used. By Catherine Pond. wish I had a REAL pantry. We had one at the farm when I lived at home. It had a window and all kinds of shelves and counter space. Grandma did her baking right in there. There was even a fridge in there. I have lots of shelves in the basement and one closet on the main floor that has shelves for lots of stuff. But how nice to have one spot you go to for all the extra stuff.

I am not a hoarder but I think our family could survive for many months before we starved. Like Mary Jane I was raised a Mormon and we are taught to keep a one year supply of food for our family. I don't know if we could make it that long but we have a room that is only for food, paper goods, cleaning supplies, etc and it is full!

I've always heard that if the "world ends as we know it" that toilet paper, menstral pads, salt, sugar, flour and coffee will be worth their weight in gold....
Getting ready for Y2K taught me a valuable lesson in preparedness. I always keep lots extra of everything...thankfully I have the room to store it. But I don't consider it hoarding...it's preparing for a "rainy" day. I get an overwhelming feeling of contentment when my pantry is full. We've dealt with lots of hard times over the years and I've always felt if you don't get hungry you can always see the light at the end of the tunnel....

Yes Kate, we do the cash stash. I am always worried where to stash my stash. If the house burns down or blows away so will my cash. So it is, shall I say "under ground". I sometimes put it in the gun safe. I don't think it will blow away and is in the shop so there is not much there to burn. Except for the fact that there are cutting torches, welders, plasma cutters. About anything you would need to cut the safe open. The freezers are also out there and a good fireproof place to stach stuff. Whenever I find a new place to put my cash stash, I always tell my daughter where it is hidden. Just in case something happens to me or I can't remember where I put it.
About the gun debate. It is my personal opinion that if an American citizen wants to own a gun then he has every right to own one. If you do not want to own a gun, then you should not. I don't debate. OK I am off my soap box now. |

I am with ya'll on the TP. I go to Aldi's and get 3 at a time of the 18 double rolls of Angel Soft. But I'm down to just 12 rolls and last time I went to Aldi's they were out. I am starting to get a little panicky. Because that's the only kind I like to use. And they're the only place I find that big size. And I just pulled out the last roll of paper towels, too.
I also stock up on dish and laundry detergent. My hubby likes Tide. I have 2 huge freezers FULL of produce from the garden. All the 3 other fridge freezers are full, too. Where am I going to put 2 hogs now?
We live 30 miles from town so it pays to not run out of stuff. Although I think I'd probably not need to go shopping for food for a year with all we have now.

The cash thing reminds me of when my grandma died. We were cleaning out their tiny house to prepare it to sell. She had a full pantry stocked in her basement. Unfortunately, we ended up throwing that stuff out as it was an unfinished basement, and had that damp smell to it, That, and we didn't know how old any of it was. She was so cute, she hoarded food, and it was only just her!
We also found six thousand dollars in cash hidden all over the house in hidey holes, and goofy places.
The new owners eventually remodeled the house and I am sure they found more cash hidden, and we hope she did, it was a single Mom who bought the house.

At the beginning of the month I usually buy some more groceries, to get through the rest of the month. IF my friend goes with me, I can buy some more because she has a car. I always try to buy enough for Elvis, so he never has to go without food. But I can't buy enough fresh veggies and bread etc to last the month, lol.
SO after a week or 2 (when all the bills are payed there is not much left, duh) I mostly eat a sandwich or make pasta. LOVE pasta so not a bad thing for me. I am happy if Elvis gets his meals and I can go on the sandwiches and pasta for a while. Till the next month again :)

Well, I guess I'm not really a hoarder. I do have a couple of things that I absolutely will not let get less than a few. I always have at least two extra toothbrushes, one extra bag of maxi pads. I stock up as much as I can on juice and bread though.I get it through a co-op so I will take as much as I can of both. I just now got down to a three loaves in the freezer. I had so much I had filled my freezer, put three loaves in Mom's freezer and had two sitting on my counter. ...We like our bread..lol

I get this weird panic mode going when I get close to reunning out of TP for some reason, & Dh thinks the TP elves just magically fill the closet.. Maybe its not called hoarding but I store in plenty a supply...HA!

lol cheryl, its a woman thing about the tp cause every time you pee you have to use it unlike a male.
i tend to hoard food somewhat cause there were times as a kid that things were low and its kinda a fear thing with me that we wont have anything. i also tend not to use it weird yeah i know

With the economy the way it is, I don't think it is hoarding these days to stock up. I do so to save $$$, and lately have been buying pretty much everything in case lots if possible. We are actually putting in an order this week for spices in bulk (1 lb. bags). You can save a fortune that way, especially on the organic stuff! In the past, when there's been really good deals on things we use all the time, we stock up too. We haven't had to buy laundry detergent in 2 years! That money can then be used for other things, like the electric bill, gas in the truck, food - you know, luxuries!

Here, when they have it, Aldi's is the cheapest place for me to buy TP. The 18 roll double size is only $8.50 and it lasts the longest b/c I don't have to use as much. But that's just my opinion. I have not found it like this anywhere else yet. I think I'll go to Target today and look.
Speaking of Target, I was there after Thanksgiving and their 50 lb bag of Purina dog chow was only $17.00 where at T.S. it's gone up to $21.00 now. And Purina cat chow is around $10.00 and it's over $12 other places. Also I've noticed Tampax is cheaper there.

I like costco- something like 24 or 26 rolls for $12-16 dollars. It lasts our household of 3 for a year because it is very economically rolled. It might not be the plushest paper- but it isn't scratchy or coarse. Thinner but smooth and it does the job well.

I don't do Sam's or Costco, but I do buy the larger things of tp and papertowels. I stock up on meat in the summer, but I've noted that I do let things go to waste when I buy too much of anything, so I've cut back. My husband says I'm a true female in that capacity...that I change my mind on a whim, and then suddenly, all those cans of beans that were a good deal get put out to the Postman on the "Stamp out Hunger" campaign!
The thing I've always stocked up on, like Dutchy, is pet food. When they have a full cupboard, I'm at my happiest. I could eat pb & j for months on end as long as the are taken care of.
Now, ask me about my weirdness about hording clothes...I have actually purchased a dress before on the clearance wrack that didn't fit me because it was TOO amazing to pass up and I didn't want someone else who "couldn't understand" the absolute gleaming wonderful-ness of this dress to get their grubby little hands on it. It was a $600 Tahari that had been marked down, marked down, marked down to $8.00. I eventually lost weight enough to wear it one time and it was SOOOOOO worth it!!! Sick, right? |

When Tom & I were really in bad no-job-no-money years, we learned then how to budget for 5, and found the best places to get the necessary thangs we needed. I found that yes, store brands usually work just as good as name brand -- we were nowhere close to a Costco and I don't even think Sams had opened, so I had to make do Lots & Lots -- bought 10 lb. bags of rice -- tried to find as many loaves of bread to bake & freeze that I could (bread machine came into use then) and also got canned items when they were 10 at $10 -- one of our local grocery stores is stepping up and having the canned item sale a lot more now, so that is a Huge help. We may only have noah livin' at home, but that lil' bugger can eat for a 24 year old!!
I would love to be near a costco, but it's 75 miles away. Not too far from where tom works, but to really save the $$, we'd need a bigger car to store everything in...so, hmmmm -- we'd need to buy a new car?! Ack! But we do stock up on canned milk (it can substituted for regular & does a pretty fine job in coffee) or canned beans (usually this time of year their cheaper) -- watch for all kinds of canned fruit too. It gets pretty cheap this time of year, I would guess for baking & stuff.
The other thing I love to find, are bakery items on markdown -- I buy fresh bread to freeze, that's organic -- pumpkin (nummy!) whole wheat W/assorted seeds, all for less than $1.25 a loaf!! Whhooppiieee!!
Keep lookin' around in the stores, there's always something With Your Name on It!! Least, that's my way of thinkin'!!

My "tushy is pampered.". I only use Charmin.. I buy it One sale where ever I find it and Use coupons when I do.. I know It really is a necessary luxury I allow myself...DH could care less what brand...he would use a corncob or Sear Roebuck catalog!

I just bought Quilted Northern at Walgreens last week.
Two -nine packs (double rolled) for seven bucks. Less the five dollar off my next shopping trip coupon. So for two bucks I got 18 rolls of tp!
I also horde soap. Not sure why.

I guess you could say I'm an "accidental" hoarder. I buy things I already have, only because I FORGOT that I already had them! Once, I bought the SAME magazine 3X!!! Ridiculous!! Although I DO have to admit that I hoard fabric. And SWEATERS!!! I LOVE sweaters! I also have this thing for cute cotton underwear and SOCKS! .... hmmm.... I wonder what Freud (sp?) would say about that?
My DH is a TERRIBLE hoarder. (a family trait I found) He hoards EVERYTHING!!! From frozen chickens to canned and paper goods to cars, trucks, farm equipment he doesn't use, and boats! Oh my! He has SEVEN boats!!!! From a little row boat to a big old flat bottem river boat with a CAR motor in it-- and every size in between! It drives me CRAZY!!!!!
But you know what? He NEVER buys TOILET PAPER for the bathroom in the garage (no Ma'am's land! EEEWWWW!!!) He always steals it from the house. Makes me SOOO MAD!!! So now I hide some of it so we don't "mysteriously" run out. How do males go through so much toilet paper in so short a time ANYWAY?
