Our state's educational channel (PBS affiliate) is having their annual fund drive and they've been showing some excellent shows. I watched one today about Dick Proenneke. He was a homesteader who built a log home and lived in the Alaskan wilderness for over 30 years. There's info about him here:
I think that was the name of the show as well. It was based on some films he shot and some journals he had written while there. I have to say I was really impressed with him. He was very self sufficient and I'm going to look for his book.
We love that show! Even bought the book. It's a wonderful story. We recorded it and play it over and over again. We love that fact he always would say " I needed a ( whatever it was) and then make it. JoAnn
I love that. I have seen it many times and just dream about doing that, too. He sure was good at everything. I wonder if the cabin is still there today.
My husband says he used to watch Dick P. films when he was a kid!Its a great program and we have seen it a number of times. Its relaxing to watch;and interesting the way he set his life up. I often wonder if he had a bad experience with people because it must have been a lonely existence.
