honesty, diana, i rarely knit from a pattern. this hat shouldn't be too hard to duplicate...
i belive that the stitch on the band is a k1, p1, sl,p1 around (basicaly a 1/2 rib with an eyelet) followed by a round of k1,p3 (a 1/3 rib). the body of the hat looks like it would be k2, p6 around followed by k around (creating a garter stitch center with ribs). of course, start by swatching both patterns and once you have your gauge you are pretty much good to go. if she likes a close fitting cap i would cast on @17-18 inches (remember to make the number of stitches even divisable by 4 so that your pattern repeats perfectly) and work in the first pattern stitch for @ 3 inches. after switiching to the second pattern stitch, work for 8 inches and then p2tog in the center of each p section to start reducing. k the nex round. p2tog in center of each p section. k round. p2tog in p sections (at this point you should have k2,p1 all the way around). break yarn and thread it though the final stitches to close up the top of cap. yay, you did it!
ok, maybe this is as clear as mud. but if you need more help, send me your gauge numbers and i'll write it out a bit better.
