Hello! I just got the MaryJane's Stitching Room book and I really, reallly, really, want to start needle tatting!!!! The problem is...I can't find out how to get any inexpensive tatting needles. Where do they sell them? I can't find one anywhere and I have only found a few places online that offer them and they aren't very cheap. I have checked on Ebay and on Craigslist all to no avail. It would be lovely if any of you fellow famrgirls could help me out and point me in the right direction....Also, where would a good place be to purchase tatting string? Thanks so much!

You can buy Tatting Needles at Hobby Lobby too. If you do use the doll needles (they work great) take an emery board and dull the tip. I was using a doll needle and kept scratching myself. Not bad, but just enough to be annoying after a while!

here they have them at walmart occasionally, micheals and joannes also carry them. someday i am gonna try my hand at that but not sure what i would do with it as most of what i make is strictly utilitarian. guess i should have tried it when my daughter was little and i wa making beautiful dresses for her. peace connie in alaska

Chelsey, Here is a link for a shop that has a set of 6 tatting needles for 6.99! www.be-stitchedstore.com/shopexd.asp?id=78&bc=no I hope this helps! I have also seen "Learn Needle Tatting" book and needles sold together in some craft stores for about 12.00! Some craft stores that carry crochet cotton will some times have thinner crochet cotton which works for tatting! You can use crochet cotton, which is often easier to start with simply because it's larger and easier to see to start with! I sometimes use 2 strands of sewing thread for tatting! Have fun!

I have found them at Hobby Lobby and Michaels as well. I found a book of tatting patterns that came with a set of needles at Hobby Lobby that I really like.

I might get me one; but you know what?
I would rather tat with a shuttle
My husband's great Aunt taught me how with a shuttle and a crochet hook.
I can use a needle too.
Oh,
I like cro-tatting too. pinkroses

Do you ladies know of any video tutrials online that teach tatting? I would love to learn how, but I have a really hard time learning from pictures. From what I can see, it looks a lot easier with the needles rather than a shuttle. Is it really or am I just imagining it?

Take care, Melissa.

I have a hard time learning from pictures as well. I've tried to learn to crochet from pics and I just can't.

However, I highly reccomend the books that were mentioned on this thread, from Barbara. I taught myself to tat, when I was only about 13 years old with them! And I had absolutely no one in real life to help me learn. (my great grandma tatted, but she had died by the time I was interested in learning! :( ) Any way......I highly suggest getting those books. Cause even if they do NOT help you learn, they have great patterns for when you do learn.

But, I can almost garuntee you will be able to learn from them. They have the best pictures I have ever seen for learning any needle art/craft.

Thanks Heather, I'll have to look for the books after Christmas, when money isn't quite so scarce ;)

Take care, Melissa.

I agree. I usually have a hard time learning needle crafts from pictures, but tatting has been different. The pictures are very clear and explicit and easy to follow. I am very happy with how my tatting is turning out!

Well...I have to say...I'm hooked! I LOVE tatting! It is so much fun! I have made a few inches of pretty tatted lae edging and I don't want to stop. I even tatted before one of my spanish classes today. A male classmate was very inquisituve and asked what I was doing. He had never seen it before. I am very much enjoying the art of tatting. I can't wait to make elaborate doilies and things like that! This is so fun! Thanks to Amanda for sending me the tatting needle!

You are very welcome I am so glad you like it. Our very own Katie out at the Farm taught me one weekend. It is very soothing once you get the hang of it.Keep us posted on your progress!!

Melissa, Needle tatting is easier than doing it with a shuttle, but don't be intimidated by a shuttle either! Once you get the hang of it, it's really quite simple! When I first saw tatting I absolutely fell in love with it! When I went to the craft store to buy my first shuttle, the lady told me it was really difficult, which only made me more determined to figure it out! As Amanda said once you get the hang of it, it is very soothing!
