In many places, when someone dies, it is a tradition to sit around together and to share. To tell stories. To remember.
Our farmgirl sister, Clare, died last night.
I was just wondering...Is there anything you can share or would like to share about Clare?

I wish I had known Clare. Every post from her that I read, and each time I saw the screen name she chose, it warmed my heart. There are many folks who post here, and just a few catch your eye, and Clare always caught mine. My prayers include her and her family, and though I have no great stories to tell, I feel I sort of knew her, and I knew she loved her home and her family, and I praise God that she found this site and made a difference here.

I never met Clare, but I came to love her strength and joy of life, her love of the simple homey things and her deep and abiding love of her dear family through her posts. She inspired me to live each day and enjoy the here and now, to look at the wonders of each day with more joy. Her posts were usually full of hope and I was always wishing I could reach across the miles and give her a thank you hug for her spirit and spunk. She fought as hard as she could to beat this thing and I will always admire her.
Sister Clare, You may not be with us now, but your spirit and strength will stay with me always. You are missed.

Clare was an understanding woman that always had a kind or encouraging word to say. She really loved her friends and was a giving spirit. Her battle with cancer was tragic, but at the same time inspiring. She fought against the illness with bravery, fortitude and and honesty that was humbling. The things that were most important to her was her God, her family, and her friends. Not too long ago she lost her sister and that was hard. The thing, she said, that she was most worried about was leaving her family behind.
I think that she knew she was the underdog in this fight. She strove to have as many good days as she could so she could spend time with her family.
I wish I would have gotten to meet her face to face. She was one amazing lady.

I always loved seeing Clare's screen name - Suzyhomemaker. That says a lot about a person. That God, her family and her home came first, that she was proud to be a keeper of her home. Her bravery and courage during her fight with cancer was inspiring to me and many others. She will be missed terribly. My heart hurts for family and the sadness they are feeling.

Clare's words in a post about her cancer:
"I am just going to try and take it one day at a time, to find simple joys and pleasures each day, to be graeful to be alive, to hug my kids."

I am just so greatful to have a little bit of Clare living with me....I have several of her quilt blocks that I will always cherrish. I have 2 that have not as of yet been assembled into a quilt so I will take advantage of the blocks, I will attach a pink heart on the underside of those 2 blocks, "Pink" representing the "Let's find a cure" for cancer. So even tho the hearts will be covered by the quilt backing, she will always be in my heart. She is...not was....but is (and always will be) an inspiration to all of us.

Here's letter we received from Clare in 2006. We ran it in our Shoulder to the Wheel issue and in doing so, had the opportunity to "meet" and get to know her--an angel on earth. MaryJane
I made my daughter, Maddie, the apron from the pattern that you gals put in with the Budget Mix in your tote bag special. It turned out so cute! She’ll be wearing it today as Dairy Maid for Wayne County’s Dairy Princess Court here in Pennsylvania. They are building a giant sundae in the park in front of the courthouse in town to celebrate June as Dairy Month. Maddie has also appeared in two parades. I just love it that she wanted to be part of a group that promotes dairy businesses in our county. She’s a farmgirl already at age 13!!!!
My husband’s sister was a Dairy Princess in 1985 when she was 16. At that time you had to have a family dairy farm to qualify. Now, you can either have a family dairy farm OR a relative who has a diary farm. Since his parents still milk cows every day, our Maddie was eligible. A girl can even purchase a dairy cow from someone’s farm and then be considered “a dairy farmer” and be eligible. She truly enjoys promoting the dairies in our region and sharing recipes and tips for milk and cheese. It has been a great opportunity for her to learn public speaking and practice being comfortable with adults. The girls dress nicely and speak well and kindly to each other and the people they meet.They are confident and exude joy in their role. It is so nice to see this wholesome outlet for the girls, and wonderful to see it come around to another generation.
Your farmgirl apron does indeed flatter every shape and size. I’m going to make quite a few for Christmas gifts this year. I think my lady friends will appreciate them—they’re decorative when hung on the wall and functional when in use, with pockets to hold tools and a bottom to lift up to form a bigger pocket when hauling produce in from the garden. I know one friend who owns a small organic dairy farm with free-range chickens and she is NEVER without her apron. I wear one every day in December because of holiday preparations, a time when my crafting and baking is in full swing.

I didn't know Clare either . . . if knowing her means meeting in person, but I believe we all got to know the true Clare through her posts . . . her obvious strength, grace in the face of death, love of God, love of her family and kindness to others came through loud and clear. Her sweet spirit, which could be felt across cyberspace by each of, exemplifies what a true farmgirl is all about. She will be missed for certain, but her spirit will live on . . . it is the spirit of a true farmgirl.

I love that we farmgirls often become "friends of the heart" long before we get to become face to face friends... in many ways it gives us the advantage to see and be seen in the light of friendship and Clare's "heart" shinned so brightly. I have lost other friends (sisters) to cancer and walk in their honor every year... And will add Clare to the list of amazing women who left us way too early, and when it is time to walk again..........add her name to the list of women I walk for.

What a lovely idea, Rebekah...
I found out yesterday that my dear friend Clare has passed away. You would have to look up my start date on this forum, but soon after finding this forum, Clare found me. She emailed me after reading my response to a topic about what magazines we subscribe to. We were both magazine junkies, and it turned out our tastes were quite similar. We were instantly sisters. We wrote each other real snail mail letters, sewed each other gifts just because, swapped magazines, and encouraged each other in our walk with God. I swear whatever swap she was involved in she always made me an extra! Her family was always topic number one and I feel as if I know them from her words and the pictures she sent. She made me a beautiful half apron from Christmas fabric of green and gold and red cardinals; it was the first apron ever made for me and it hangs in my kitchen year around. I have so many gifts she made me, and what is amazing is so many other women do too!! She had so much to give!
I am broken-hearted at her loss. I am so sorry for the experience that Steve and her precious children are going through. My prayers are with you all. Your wife and mother left no doubt with any of us about how much she loved you; loved being with and doing for you.
I am so blessed to have known her. The media of course magnifies the bad when it comes to meeting people on-line. (And if it keeps our kids safer, so be it) but I made a true friend in Clare and I will truly miss her.

Clare was a wonderful woman. I am lucky enough to have something to always remind me of her. Just before Caleb was born I recieved a beautiful blue quilt for him, and every time I wrap him in it I think of how she made it for us. When she was dealing with being so ill and I dont think I have ever appreciated anything so much in my life..... and now I am crying...she was a great woman and wife and mother

Clare was a funny girl at times. She would be my "drill sargaent" when it came to dealing with my pain. She would let me have it when it came to managing the pain from Fibro, the emoitonal, mental and physical. She would email me in capital letters asking me if I was managing the pain. And yes, I would tell her the truth, sometimes through the darn tears. But oh, she could make me laugh hard. Don't we all need good laughs in the midst of lifes crazy circumstances. She encouraged me, badgered me about asking for help when I needed it. For when you have been so independent and helping others, the hardiest thing is to ask and recieve help. We shared about how mad she was, how she hated cancer. I sure couldn't disagree with her on that. Oh my gosh, how she could sew. I have a great apron I have been wearing from her in honor of her.
Now you want the funny story to it that got her to laughing......here goes. She sent me the apron around the first of December last year, I was so proud of that puppy, that I wore it when dd and I took the grand girls to the thearter to watch Alvin and the Chipmunks. So, of coarse, after the movie our first stop is the bathroom. My apron ties were in the back and I bet you can just guess what I did, yep, landed that puppy right in the toilet.....oh my..... The funniest part was sharing our lives and my goof ups through my married life. Laugher was definitely a part of the friendship as I am sure that it was for others of you. She made many a day brighter for me, as many of you do.
She made the baby quilt for Caleb as a gift from me to him because I physically could not do it. She was the essence of love.
Miss her.
