Hey everyone, My name is Lori and have been reading all the wonderful posts here! I am from upstate NY and it's starting to get really cold up here!Thermometer said 25 degrees this AM. LOL I am married with 3 grown children and reintroduced myself to MJFarms just a few weeks ago. I love to crochet, knit, tat, cook, garden, sew (even though I seriously need to practice!)canning, and working with my hands.
I am hoping to start my own Chapter after the holidays and hopefully meet people online that are from this area. Everyone thus far has been great in the forums and it's indeed a "Sisterhood" here. Thanks! Lori

| Wow, Lori, you are far north! My son went to college in Potsdam (Clarkson) and we have a cabin near Watertown (Evans Mills) so I know how cold it gets up there...but it is beautiful. Welcome, this is a wonderful place to be. |

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! Suzan, I live just about 20 minutes from Potsdam. Yes, it gets very CcccoooolllllddD!!! But have had to adjust over the years. I am a southern type of gal and love the warmth, me and cold just don't see eye to eye! Thanks for the Welcome.

Welcome Lori! I think you will love it here, everyone is wonderful. I don't get along with the cold either, that's why I think I'll stay put in the South! But I bet it is beautiful up there.

Yippee! Another NY gal! Welcome Lori. I am from Avon, which is just south of Rochester. My MIL is from Watertown and my SIL went to Potsdam.

Kris,I take it you're in Georgia? I have a daughter living in Ellabell outside of Savannah....ahhhh would love to be there right now! LOL thanks for the welcome.

I used to live in Sav. and Tybee, too. Love to visit. My mom lives in Metter (where everything's better). She works in Statesboro. Lived there, too. It is nice there, but love it here. I've been here 30 yaers now.

Kris, I went down there for the first time in years about 3 years ago visiting my daughter. We went to Paula Deen's for lunch and I remember just sitting there eating all my favorite foods (I don't cook them much up here anymore because my husbands family won't try southern food! My BIL gave me a bag of dried blackeyed peas one year for christmas as a joke. Atmosphere was just wonderful, people are so friendly anyway, then the bartender started singing "Georgia" and I began to cry. I really do belong down there! I felt like I had comehome. So I really try to visit a couple times a year and my dream is to someday at least get as far as North Carolina. Tybee was WONDERFUL! It was my first time near the ocean ever. What an experience. I am slowly overcoming my fear of swimming as well because of it but that is another story. Thanks for writing!

Angie, Hey! That's what about 4.5 to 5 hours from me? how's the weather been down there? It's been raining all day, very gray but thankfully staying above freezing! I am not ready for snow. So what types of things are you interested in?

Let's see, the weather is all over the place right now! We get lake effect from Ontario and a little from Erie. On Friday it was 65 degrees but today we might get some of the white stuff! (I imagine you get more of that than we do.)
Hm, what am I interested in? (How long have you got!!) I have always been a crafter but since being on the forum have been inspired to try many new things. I love to read,crochet, knit,sew, scrap crafts, rubber stamping, scrap-booking and am hoping to teach myself tatting this winter. I was going to attempt canning but am really not at my best in the kitchen to say the least so decided to let that one go.

Sounds to me like you have quite a talent for working with your hands! Canning does take a little patience but well worth it in the end. Try starting with applesauce for example. It's easy to make and you can then concentrate on the canning process. Just a suggestion. I just taught myself to needle tat all because of a short video that i watched on MJF site. It gave me that push to try and I LOVE it. I have two different trims going right now! I want to use them on the pillow case swap that I signed up for. We shall see though how it goes. I do a lot of the same things you do and find it hard to decide what to work on first! LOL YOu take care, speakin of the white stuff, we are getting a little here and there today. It's not going to stick though, it's to warm. Take care. Do you belong to a chapter?

Funny you should suggest apple-sauce, I had everything ready to make it. Friends lent me all the tools, I picked a lot of free apples but just panicked when it finally came down to it!!! So, the apples went to a friends horse and I'm not sue if i will try again! (so silly, I know)
I have not decided whether to start with needle tatting or shuttle but it will probably be shuttle because I have one of those but not the needles. Hmmm..I think I will make some tea, put on a Christmas movie and begin...
Yes, I am in a local chapter "The Straw Hat Society" We have met to do an on-going recipe swap and hope to do more next year. Sometimes it's tough getting everyone together!

Lori--welcome from south central Kentucky. I wish you lived closer--I would love to learn to tat. I have a few pieces of tatting and think they are the prettiest things. I don't know anyone in my area that knows the art. Maybe I should advertise in the local paper for a teacher!!!! My husband and I and a group of neighbors and friends do a bus tour each fall. Our trip this year was to Savannah. We ate at Paul Deens and Uncle Bubbys and the Pirates House and a few other places. It was the "foodiest" trip we have ever been on--but it was all very good. I want to try her macaroni and cheese recipe soon. It makes such a large amount, I will have to wait for a family gathering to make it--with Thanksgiving coming up that shouldn't be a problem.

You know I tried a few years ago to use the shuttle first and just didn't have any success with it. It wasn't until seeing MJ's video, a short tutorial on Tatting that I decided to try the needle method. What a difference! I am left handed and not real coordinated so this method works good for me. You simply learn the basic double stitch and go from there. If I were there I would show you! LOL Give it a try, the materials a very inexpensive so you aren't out much if you decide you don't like it. Take care and happy Tatting! Lori
