I just started a pot of ham-bean soup. Has anyone ever made this? It is so good on a cold day like today.

Also will have a pot of collard greens cooking soon, too. Maybe even an apple crisp for desert. OOOHHHH, I can't wait!

Don't ya'll just love fall cooking?

Kris

Oooh! Sounds good! I live in Texas now, but I'm originally from Georgia so those greens sound especially good!

Ok, I've never had ham/bean soup. It sounds great on a cold day. Can you put up your recipe?

I made the usual Sunday pot roast and whole wheat potato bread. Haven't decided on a dessert yet. Almost out of eggs, so maybe a pie.

Hey, Lisa, all I do is put a small bag of dried white beans in a crock pot with water. Dice up a few carrots, celery, onions, ham, (or a ham bone with a little meat left on it ) salt, pepper, and a little sugar. Mine's been going since this morning on high and is almost ready. MM, MM good! With some crusty hard bread, that's all ya need.

Mmmmm that sounds so good. I'll keep that in mind the next time I have a ham.

Diana, is yours anything like mine? I guess there are several different recipes out there.

I just got Paula Dean's Mag a few days ago, but all her recipes are too rich for me. But look SO good. She has 5 fruitcake recipes and I think I'd like to try the cranberry walnut one. It looks good.

Kris- I will use the dried great northern beans or the 15 bean beans. I soak the beans overnight in a pot of water, then drain. I'll put in the beans, water, cubed ham, salt & pepper. Hubby can't do onions so I don't put them in.

So, am I the only one who likes ketchup in my ham n bean soup? I'll put a bit of it in my bowl...so yummy!

Not much of a ketchup person. Never tried it in my soup, though. Sounds interesting.

Diane, how long will the beans have to cook, please? I'd like to try your recipe. I don't have a crockpot.... maybe I should get one?? Thanks!

Carol-Usually I just make my ham n bean soup on the stove, but I knew I was going to be gone all day so used the crockpot instead this time around.

I bring the soup to a boil, then turn down the heat and let it simmer for several hours, stirring occassionally. We like ours thick so I like to let it cook for quite awhile.
