have any of you discovered a favorite brand and shade that comes close to recreating the olde 'turkey red' color in embroidery?
i have a wonderful set of books called (red and white embroidery) and they say DMC 321. i bought some tonight .. but it is kinda' fire engine red .. i also found another number that is a little more 'primitive country barn red .. don't know the number .. it's downstairs right now. and do any of you have a favorite olde 'blue' shade/brand that you use for the 'blue work'?
i have several spools of olde turkey red thread .. but haven't used it for fear it would be too fragile .. AND .. i love the look of the spools with the original thread on them too much to use them. |

I agree...321 would be way too bright. I will have to look and see which one I use. I just go by how it looks..but I know I have the color I like.
Never have done blue work...not my favorite color..but I bet it would look nice.

I use DMC 498 - it's a beautiful deep red color.

| I just bought some DMC 489. I think it is the perfect color. I agree 321 is too bright and new looking. I also just bought an old box of spools with the thread. I would never try to use my old ones they are just to make me smile. |

Ivy .. i've sometimes strung the olde wooden spools of thread and used them as a 'necklace' on some of my larger rag dolls.
also made a 'garland' from some .. interspersing the wooden bobbins with big bold vintage buttons .. and antique homespun 'rag ties' along the garland. Frannie |

Hi everyone, do you all do the 'red work' on white materials? I was wondering about trying it on brown aor natural material. I expect it wouldn't stand out as well, but wondered if anyone had tried that.
I spin for a hobby and have been spinning silk thread, and have a nice kind of maroon into red, slik cap to spin. I would love to use it for embroidered gifts, but want to keep the homespun feel.
Actually, I probably won't be getting these done until next christmas! So that gives me alot of time to experiment! jenny louise |

i've been collecting, for a long time, olde linen towels and large furniture doilies and cotton feedsacks and pillowcases and tattered white petticoats to embroider on. i love the soft feel of olde fabrics that have been washed lots and lots of times. jenny .. i've also used the unbleached muslin .. and will sometimes 'tea dye' it to make it look older.
jenny louise .. HOW do you spin silk? by hand .. on a spinning wheel? it must take forever! but sounds so beautiful! and red will show up if your fabric is darker than 'white' .. but not tooo brown i wouldn't think. xo, frannie

Either DMC 815 or 816 will take you even a shade darker than 498. And use a lower count nubby linen to get a great look.

OOOh..I like those too.. I had some on hand too. I am doing a couple simple quotes on small pillows for gifts and they will be perfect. I almost always tea dye my muslin for redwork or any embroidery too. I like it to look older..only exception is gifts for folks that don't appreciate old and cool. (go figure!)

Haven't come back to this thread for awhile, and frannie, I spin using a high whorl hand spindle, very easy and works up quickly. I did a bobbin full yesterday in the car while we were driving. Actually, i wasn't driving; hubby was!
I gave my red silk thread to a friend for a gift, so i will work on some more. She makes impressive quilts out of jeans and does alot of embroidery work on them, so she was tickled with the thread.
I just love that so many of the subscribers here are into hand work of some type, amd I wish that i could really see it all...talents aplenty! Love and light, jenny |

Frannie, I would love to work a sample up for you and send it before you decide you want to purchase any. It would be a shame to get a color that you wouldn't want to work with. You also have to work with a larger eyed needle as the hand spun, although fine, has some of the endearing lumps and bumps that go with hand spun. I personally find that one of the most wonderful qualities of handspun fiber and hope to heavens that i am never so expert that one could not tell my fibers from store bought!

jenny ... i know already i want some! whatever shade it turns out to be .. i will find a wonderful use for it.
wouldn't it be fun if a bunch of us ordered some and all did a 'stitchery' project and shared our photos here for everyone to see? anyone else wanna' do this?
