Ladies, My husband has been in the hospital since 9/11/08 and he's finally coming home tomorrow!!! He had a severe allergic reaction to over the counter Aleeve and that put him into acute kidney failure. He's had 2 kidney biopsies and both have given us the same results-this is a temporary condition. He's had 5 dialysis treatments and his kidneys are really bouncing back on their own. We've had so many people praying for us-all over the world. His doctors have told us that it's nothing short of a miracle that he's doing so well. Less that a week ago, he was critical and his numbers were at a place where the only option was dialysis. He will have 3 outpatient treatments this week but his doctors don't think he's going to need them. He may be able to return to work in about 2 weeks. Just wanted to share the great news ! It's been a long 7 1/2 weeks but now thinks can start to return to somewhat normal?!
Tired but sooooooo blessed, Bonnie Farmgirl #333 |

Wow. Its so strange that the reaction was to Aleve. Ironically enough, my super healthy, soccer playing husband was also in the hospital for the first time in his life, three weeks ago, for something similar. He had eaten mushrooms from our yard, that happened to be amanita phalloides, death cap (1/2 a cap is lethal--he had two), and was facing acute liver failure. Our ordeal only lasted a week, but included the M-ICU, a step down from the ICU, and we had consults with the transplant surgeons. I completely understand the emotional roller coaster you have been on. It's hard to believe that something as benign as Aleve (or sauteed mushrooms) could have the power to change your life irreversibly. I cried in the hallway at the hospital several times, saying to myself "I can't believe this is happening. How can my life change so quickly." I'm sure that you have said all those things too. I also want to warn you that the emotional effects linger after the physical effects are gone. Several times I have found myself (usually while alone) crying for no apparent reason. Really, it comes down to the fragility of life and how quickly it can change. I am so glad that your husband is healing. Blessings.

Bonnie, I'm so glad your husband is finally coming home. What a horrible experience for all of you. I hope his kidneys function normally again before he needs anymore dialysis.

Danielle,
I hope your husband is on the mend. No more yard pickins' for him! Yes, we had the organ talks along with dialysis and for a short moment, even considered what would happen if hubby needed a kidney. That's all behind us now and I pray both our spouses will continue to heal from the inside out!

I'll be praying for both husbands as well.
Of all things to have aleeve cause that - have other cases been reported? It seems as though it should be pulled off the shelf if so. Do you think that your husband was a rare exception with the alergic reaction?
Mushrooms - I'm always tempted to pick and try, but unless it is a morrel, I stay far away.
I'm glad that both men are home and on the mend!

Ann,
About 1 % of the population has a similar reaction to Alieve (as my hubby) per year! That's over 100,000 people nationwide. The company knows this and puts a disclaimer in their instructions. His GP was the one who told him to take the product. See, even doctors think it's o.k. to take. Ladies, please be sooooo careful with this drug. His kidney doctors all agree that it's a terrible drug and that if this drug had to go through the very strict screening today-it would never pass!

Bonnie, I am sorry I didn't catch this post sooner, but I am so very happy to hear that your hubby is recovering and home now! I can't imagine going through something like that! I hope that all gets back to normal quickly and I will keep praying for your family!
