This "notice" came to me, via Organic Valley in thier newsletter, hopefully most of you subscribe to it already, but just in case wanted to make sure you saw this and then took the approperiate actions. We see a lot of mom's at our market, and I know that this has been a hard fought fight... SO to loose ground on it is maddening... both for those that have been in the fight and for mom's trying to provide the very best on so very little income.
A Message for our Farm Friends and Consumer-Partners in Washington State
Dear Washington Farm Friend,
Citing costs, the WIC program in Washington State is proposing to cut organic milk and organic baby cereal from the WIC food package and include the restrictive qualifier "non-organic" for several foods. This qualifier will restrict WIC recipients from obtaining organic versions of these approved food types for clients the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).
It's true that organic milk costs more to produce and buy. However, it has been demonstrated in repeated studies that children who consume organic foods have lower levels of pesticides in their bodies than those who consume equivalent conventionally produced items. Further, it has been shown that organic milk does have nutritional benefits over conventional. And supporting local organic farmers can have benefits for both Washington's economy and its environmental health. Price tags alone do not determine the ultimate value of the organic option for WIC clients and for Washington overall.
We feel that all mothers should have the opportunity to make choices about which foods are the best choice for themselves and their children, be they organic or otherwise. If you agree, we encourage you to send a comment to Washington State Department of Health (WSDoH).

WSDoH is expected to finalize decisions about the 2009 food package this coming Tuesday, October 21. The comment period is short, so your input makes a difference, now more than ever!
1) Send a quick comment to WSDoH at wic@doh.wa.gov. Don't have much time? Then make it simple - the important thing is that they hear that you care!
2) Tell your friends to do the same.
3) Let us know you spoke out. Better yet, send us your comments!

Rene - definitely, and a lot of WIC moms may not even know about organic unless they hear about it through WIC.

I'm not a mom, but am a firm believer in organic food being better than non organic for adults and children. I copied and pasted some of the message above since it was so well worded and sent WIC and email.
Roses are red, Violets are blue; But they don't get around Like the dandelions do.
