Dutchy got me to thinking and thinking hard!!
I had a friend who said
"When your stuff begins to "Own You" it is time to own them."
Ha.
How true that is .
I am not good at organizing; when I was younger I was.
When I read "Dutcy's" post I realized we could be kinder spirits.
Most of yall know we are building our retirement home.
True, I have gotten rid of a lot.
Took mounds of things to the Good will.
Got rid of mountains of things that were worn out. broke down
just plain used up !!
Honestly, why do I let things pile up?
Mostly books , magazines, material
When one has so many hobbies as I do; one can accumluate mountains of things.
I think I need a De-cluttering problem and one that makes me main tain my things.
I come by it honestly however; from Mom and her Mom.
They were both "collectors of Junk"
Hubby and Son just can't understand my "Sickness"Ha.
I am trying to over come it.
I suffer from severe depression and many conditions and diseases
I realize that if I could control my "Orgainztion Skills"
I would probably feel like I am accomplishing quite a bit.
Oh well,
I know I am not alone now;

Sheila, this has been my pain in the backside forever, until I realized I was hanging onto stuff which was thus dictating who I was, even though it wasn't who I am. Does that make sense?? : )
We JUST downsized by 75% of what we own..yes 75%!!! But, that 75% was stuff that wasn't us, that I tired from cleaning, moving and worrying over. It does not belong in our dream life and was holding me back personally, as it was remnants of who I used to be. It was stiffling me, staring at me everyday and not letting me move on.
I have very clear dreams and goals now. I can move towards them without being held down by stuff or clutter. It lets me think clearer, I can keep the house very orderly with just an hour here or there. I am not embarassed if someone just pops in. I used to feel dirty and I would get depressed looking at the heaps of stuff.
I never was able to define my style or what I liked and I can finally do that. I am also a person who longer has an attachment to things. If you read all of my previous posts, you can see my own evolution and thinking. It is really an eye opening and amazing experience.

This is something that I've been working on since this summer. I have gotten rid of some "stuff" and still find that I can't let go of other stuff because I just might need it down the road. Like you, Shiela, I think I got it from my mom, too. When asked why she was saving some piece of junk or broken item, she would just say "well, you never know!" I find myself doing the very same thing (for years now).
This summer, I went through a bunch of stuff that I didn't like or never used and got rid of them. I don't like bread machine bread and never used the thing; so it went. I never wanted an indoor grill and it cooked meat way too fast anyway; so it went. Lots of pictures and old junk went away, too. But then I found I couldn't part with a particularly pretty picture frame because "you never know" when it might come in handy! Shame on me. But I just can't let go of everything - yet. I have dozens of candle holders and probably hundreds of candles. Do I really need them all? Well, "you never know"! I'm still working on it and each weekend, while cleaning, I always find something else taking up space somewhere that is seldom, if ever, used and I get rid of it. It's going to take me a while, though.
Then there is the stuff with sentimental value attached. I have a fairly large collection of teddies and birds and birdhouses and I remember where or who I got each one from and feel awful even thinking about getting rid of them because they were given to me with love. How does one deal with that?

They muliply just like regular bunnies. Tee hee.
I guess we just have to close our eyes and start throwing Ha.

OH yes!! My mom was the same too! I remember after she passed away, I had to/wanted to move to my own home (for the first time in my life) and noticed how many stuff my mom had and never used! Bathtowels she bought many and never used them, because "you never know if there is another war and we didn't have towels then" and more things like that.
I am now using all those new towels and threw out the old ones when I moved.
And with the sheets too, she never used the pretty ones my grandparents brought from Canada!
They are even wrapped like new, wow! I will use those too, make duvet covers and just use them.
I mean I don't have children, so who is going to enjoy them after i pass away? Nobody, they will get thrown out and nobody saw/used them. So will do that asap too!
So yes, it is a trait I inherited form my mom. (But she was not as cluttery as I am, lol)

Let me just say I HATE STUFF.....now the precious things that do mean something to me I hold dear. If I outgrow it or hate it or not care about it out it goes. My family is cute and mean well with the you never know, you might need it or use it theory but I just can't. My father is a packrat (newspapers, paper, magazines) galore and I just am repulsed and could NEVER live that way. I enjoy things but they do not mean they are a priority in my life. It is fun but man oh man it does not make ME ME.
