So this morning my neighbor called and said I need to come get the chicks that already hatched from the incubater and there were still some hatching. So hurried down there after milking goats and chores to get them. There were 10 already and several eggs that hadn't hatched yet. I got them in the car and started down the driveway and thought I ran over a branch or something, looked in the mirror and saw the little dog.
It was so horrible. It was the neighbor's old Pomeranian type dog that never listened and would always run to their house. It died. I don't think it would have made it. But other than being run over by a huge vehicle, it was a quick death. I feel so awful. The lady came out and her son was there already. I went over and just hugged her. She said it was bound to happen sooner or later.
So I've already had a happy-sad day and it's not even 11:00 yet. This happened a few hours ago.
The chickies are so cute. They're Barred Rock. Hopefully the rest of the eggs are good. |

Kristin - I am so sorry for your start to the day.. I might say that sometimes an animal picks an ending to their life that requires us to be the one to end it. It is never something we wish to do but life is never easy - today you are also assisting 10 wonderful little beings to begin their life and with that take comfort. Maybe you could name one of the chickens after the dog. It is a way to honor the dog and to continue it's presence. Big hugs to you...

Gah! "It was bound to happen sooner or later." Yeah, except if the dog's owner was RESPONSIBLE and didn't let it run all over the place, then it NEVER would have happened.
That attitude makes me so mad. If pet owners would be responsible these things wouldn't happen. I don't think they realize that just because they don't care enough about their pets to keep them safe, that it isn't traumatic to those of us that do love animals when we run over them.
I'm so sorry you had to go through that. :-( |

The dog's name was Poppy. I love that name. I had a dog years ago named Poppy. That's a good idea to name one of the chickies. I just got home and they are all so cozy and warm under the heat light. I love the baby chicks.
And you're right, Mary, about being more responsible pet owners. My 2 Rat Terriers are 11 1/2 and if I forget to shut the gate, I see them on the road when I get back. So I always make sure to shut gates. My lab will follow, too. He did get hit about 6 months ago by a lady in a brand new SUV. She came and told me she'd just hit my dog. I would never have known because he was running and jumping as usual. He put a dent in her front fender. I offered to pay for any damages, but she said that's why she had insurance. He and I both were lucky that time.
I always worry about a goat or pig getting out and causing a wreck, but that's life in the country. |

I know how bad you feel Kristin. I hit my dog of 16 years a few years ago. I was pulling into the garage & she suddenly darted under the car. We live on a bit of a hill, so I have to gun it a little to get in the garage. I never saw her until she let out a yelp. It broke my heart, she passed away on the ride to the vets. I am grateful she was unconscious the whole time. I still look for her, it is hard to accept after all this time what happened. A big hug to you!

I had to go back there this afternoon to get the last little chickie. I did not see any dogs from the neighbors. They must have them put up now. I hope so.
Thank you all for your thoughts. Everyone here is so nice and most of us have all been through some of the same things. It's nice to be able to come to this place and tell ya'll some things that I would not be able to talk about to others. Because everyone is so supportive of everyone else. It's great to have this. Thanks. I love how ya'll just come to the aide of all these sisters.

Boy what a rough kind of day!
Poor pup, but like you said , hopefully it was quick
If it makes you feel any better a few yeas ago a co-worker ran over an ostrich
Sound crazy??
The stupid bird had dropped to the ground in a mating gesture and was lying far below and directly behind the vehicle and mirrors where neither of us could see
oops!
And yes, it was a quick death too.
