Farm Kitchen:  What kind of kitchen?  |

Hey, I just wondered what types of kitchens ya'll have?
I guess mine is a traditional kitchen, the front door kind. It's an actual room with the dining room off of it. It's about 14'x8'. Not big as far as new kitchens, but just right for me to do what I need to do.
I've been seeing all these new houses with the kitchen right out there in the middle of the house. I don't think I'd want everyone to see all my stuff all over the place. If I don't feel like cleaning up right away, I don't have to see it.
Anyway, just wondered if anyone has "farmhouse" kitchens or the newer kitchens. And if you're totally happy with them. I do like mine. Could be a little bigger,though.

My kitchen is kind of farmhouse style. It's big enough, anyway. I don't really like the layout much and as soon as dh can do the plumbing to move the bathroom (which is right off the kitchen -yuck!), I'll be able to move my pantry to the old bathroom, close off the doorway to the old pantry (which is kind of like a bump-out) and rearrange the appliances to where they would make more sense. Then the old pantry will be removed from the outside of the house. It's kind of falling off right now, because it was built right on the ground and the bottom has totally rotted. The previous owners had carpeted the kitchen and that will have to go, too. We picked up some hardwood flooring at a yard sale some time ago and that will go down in the kitchen once we get going on the switcheroo.

Our home is the typical 1940's NC shotgun style.
Meaning you can stand on the front porch, fire a round and have it go through the back door.
Although our back door has eben sealed and made into a siting room.
The kitchen is central and you have to walk through it to get to the back room and bathroom. It constantly needs sweeping due to foot traffic. It has a low bar we eat at. I hate it because it's 2 tier. It is good for canning and holding lots of canning items at one time on multiple levels.
We are planning to remodel the kitchen in the very near future.
That bar is definitley coming out to be replaced w/ a real kitchen table. We'll also add a pantry and a ton of shelves/cubbards. Had thought about hardwood extending from the back room to the kitchen, but like I said, it gets a ton of foot traffic, and not to mention, dog slobber/water drops/canning mess. So we'll go the vinyl floor route in a pattern that's a little more modern and in something that doesn't show dirt as well.
The bar now has storage under neath it, but it's big and dark and you have to practically stand on your head to find anything. It makes clutter accumulate at a very unorganized rate. Can you tell I don't like it? Hubby laughs. When it coms time to remodel, I'll be taking a slege to it, or at least be the first to pry it off the floor. It will be so cathartic.
If money were no object, I'd add a second level to the house, a garage, full basement and about 10 more feet in every room STARTING with the kitchen. Our bedroom is right inside the front door. I hate everyone being able to see into that part of our lives, so that door is always pulled closed.

Julie, I've got the same sink. I got mine at Southeastern Salvage for about $40.00. I love it because it's huge. And so easy to keep clean. When we bought this house we had to gut the inside of every room (haven't gotten to dining room yet) and start over. I did reuse most of the kitchen cabinets, though. And when we added the upstairs, I bought a dishwasher. That was the last thing the guys did and I was the happiest about that.
Your kitchen looks very happy. I love the color, too.

I just have a country type kitchen. It is large enough to have a small and larger table. Two windows, one over the sink and one by the larger table. I took some pictures--just now--I didn't realize what a mess I was or still am. Of course I just got back from camping and the girls just got back late last night from a two day rodeo. So bear that in mind. Here are some picture and where I am standing is by a table and the large window looking outside and also the door to the dining room. The wood stove will have to be undecorated soon as it is getting chilly at night now. Anyway here goes:
