 And by them, I mean "THEM"; you know... the "BIG THEM" the ones that we pay to make the decisions for the rest of us.
Mark McAfee a Raw Dairy Rancher and Almond Farmer in Fresno CA (wwww.organicpasture.com) told my husband and I two summers ago about the "plight" of CA almond farmers and the fight that they were/are in and I have been watching the topic closely since then.
Basically it is like this... The "Them" want all US almonds to be pasteurized, saying it is for "public health"... (I for one didn't know we were in health danger from US Almonds, but then again, I am not one of "THEM"). Their brilliant idea is to Use Propylene Oxide to disinfect the almonds sold to consumers. YUMMY!. According to the Cornucopia Institutes website.... PO "is so toxic that it is not even registered for a use as a food processing agent in Europe, Asia, Africa and Canada. Even the EPA recognizes it as a carcinogen and cause of diseases and a "suspected toxicant" of the liver and gastrointestinal, immune, developmental and respitory systems".
On the Economic side of the fence~ big chemical companies stand to make LARGE profits from Ranchers being forced to dump this on their US Grown crops however; Almonds coming into the US wont have the same guidelines....Most of us that are informed consumers won’t want to by US grown Almonds or almond products (like almond milk)that have been treated, so we will buy other countries almonds, AND US almonds won’t be able to be sold to the countries listed above (who know better then to allow their citizens to each KNOWN TOXINS)... The only ones that seem to be on the winning side of this are the chemical companies and the foreign markets.
Have we really gotten to the point in our Country, that we can’t even feed our children Almonds without poisoning them? This isn't the way I want to leave the world for my kids and grand kids for sure.
I hope that you will take the time to research the issue for yourself and then do what you can to support the US Almond Growers who so desperately need our support. Check it all out at www.cornucopia.org/almonds
I know that some farmers would stop farming rather then to offer this substandard and hurtful product to the market.. and when we have no farmers we have no food! We have seen where being dependant on foreign oil has gotten us, do we really want to do the same with our food?

I am glad to be home~ So many things are "beckoning". The weather changed so fast here~ I am hoping not to loose everything with the freezing temps. We went from 90 degrees to below freezing while I was gone. I hope that those of you that have the more mild temps will save lots of seed.. we in the NW may need some in the Spring..

You know Ruth, that is a question I keep asking myself that a lot these days. Politians, ugh, I wouldn't give you bushel basket full of good rotted horse apples for one of them. Obviously, the contents of that bushel basket will do me more good than the politian.

Hey Ladies,
Thanks for taking the time to check this out. It so saddens me. With every "new thing" I read on this kind of topic the more I find myself asking "what are we doing to our children" and to our own citizens? Yet, I find that it is an area that "we" collectively can make a difference.
