Hello!
I'm so excited that I've found this wonderful community to ladies with like interests. When I read the caption about Being a Farm Girl, or always wanted to be...I just knew I found my niche. I've always wanted a farm with a few horses, some goats, chickens, sheep, and plenty of dogs. My dream is to do organic gardening for my husband's restaurant (his dream is to open one).
Recently, the dream moved closer to becoming a reality. My parents own close to 40 acres of land in the NC mountains. They've owned the land for 22 years and bought the land with plans of raising their family there with a few animals. It never quite happened and so after considering selling the land, they finally decided to build there and give my husband and me about 7 acres. It was sort of a family joke, because I never thought my husband would be interested. One day we were discussing the fact that we both hate living in the city and want to be closer to family now more than ever (we have a 5 month old little girl). So, we decided that this is what was calling us and our dreams could actually be a reality.
Our plan is the move there and build our home within the next 2 years. I'm starting the ground work now to get my garden area planned out and maybe even start planting a few things that require more time (fruit trees, asparagus, etc).
I know there is a lot to plan and think about, so any advice would be great. I've been doing a lot of reading about owning milk goats and making goat cheese. I've always wanted to own a few sheep, but I don't have an interest in raising anything for meat.

Welcome! Your plans sound very exciting! That would be so neat if you guys could open a restaurant with your organic products! I work in a restaurant and am trying to use more organic stuff. And congratulations on the baby girl! I'm flying out to NC in two weeks to visit my best friend. She also just had a baby! He will be 5 months soon too!

Hi Amy! Welcome to the farm. You will most definitely find like minded farmgirls here on the forum.
What a wonderful opportunity for you and your family to move to the country, grow your own organic veggies and possibly provide others with those veggies.

It is according to which side of Charlotte you are but I am 40 minutes from the north Charlotte area. You sound like you are so excited with your new adventure of farm life. I too would love to have a large farm like I had grown up on but right now I have to settle for my one acre mini garden. That's okay because I did have the experience years ago.
My daughter has a new baby that is 5 months too. Busy time! Welcome to farmgirl. Yes it is fun here and lots to do. I am still kinda new and still finding my way around. What part of the mountains are you going to? My sis lives just over the NC border.

Thank you so much for all of the warm welcomes! It means a lot to me to be surrounded by such caring and thoughtful women :)
To answer a few of your questions...the land is in Polk County, NC (about 20 minutes from Flat Rock/Hendersonville ). My husband and I visited (it's about 1.5-2 hrs drive) the property with my parents and the little one a couple of weeks ago. We think we've found the spot to build the house! My Dad took us hiking over the land to search out different spots, but we believe we've decided on a place above a patch of old Christmas trees...and I really mean old Christmas trees! When I was a child the trees were only about 6 ft but now they are a towering swaying beautiful forest. The land has had many use of the years...Christmas tree farm, cotton farm, homestead..I don't even know the extent of it yet. I also had an opportunity to view the garden area. It needs a lot of work and clearing, but it will be well worth it. There is a small creek that runs across the bottom of the plot also.
Anyway, I could go on and on, but I have so many questions and need some suggestions so I'm going to start posting around the site to get some feedback. Thanks again for welcoming me with open arms and for your support. I have to remind myself each day that in order for my dream to become a reality, I have to work hard. But, the fact that with my hard work I can make my dream come true, makes me smile instead of panic. :)
