Does anyone have a great recipe for homemade chai tea? Smooth & creamy? My fave is one I buy at WM, Oregon chai. I'm trying to save $$, and I thought I could make my own version.
Thanks,
Erin

Are you looking for an instant version (just add water and stir) or brewed chai using loose leaf tea and spices? I think I have both in my arsenal of recipes!

this is the only one i've tried so far... it's not to bad, but not as good as the stuff you can buy (my fave is Big Train Chai)
1 C nonfat dry milk powder 1 C powdered non-dairy creamer 1 C french vanilla flavored powdered non-dairy creamer 2 1/2 C white sugar 1 1/2 C unsweetened instant tea 2 t. ground ginger 2 t. ground cinnamon 1 t. ground cloves 1 t. ground cardamom
1. in a large bowl, combine milk powder, non-dairy creamers, sugar and instant tea. stir in spices. in a blender or food processor, blend 1 cup at a time until mixture is the consistency of a fine powder.
2. to serve: stir 2 heaping tablespoons misture into mug of hot water
though when i made it i didn't blend it cause i didn't have a blender... it might be better blended. and of course, i like to add it to a half and half mixture of hot water and hot milk.
this recipe came from Allrecipes.com and is titled "Chai Tea Mix"

Instant Chai Tea Mix
* 1 cup nonfat dry milk powder * 1 cup powdered non-dairy creamer * 1 cup French vanilla flavored powdered non-dairy creamer * 2 1/2 cups white sugar * 1 1/2 cups unsweetened instant tea * 2 teaspoons ground ginger * 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon * 1 teaspoon ground cloves * 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
* add to recipe box Add to Recipe Box My folders: * add to shopping list Add to Shopping List * add a personal note Add a Personal Note
DIRECTIONS
1. In a large bowl, combine milk powder, non-dairy creamer, vanilla flavored creamer, sugar and instant tea. Stir in ginger, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. In a blender or food processor, blend 1 cup at a time, until mixture is the consistency of fine powder. 2. To serve: Stir 2 heaping tablespoons Chai tea mixture into a mug of hot water.
FOOTNOTE
You may choose to omit the French vanilla creamer, and use 2 teaspoons vanilla extract instead. To do so, mix the vanilla into the sugar, let it dry, then break the sugar into small lumps. Follow the same procedure as above.

I'm glad to see the instant versions! I do have a traditional chai recipe. It's not hard to do. Try it and see!
I heat about a cup of milk on the stove and when it is near boil I turn it off and add a teaspoon of black tea leaves (or a tea bag), a teaspoon of Garam Masala spice (McCormick spice from the grocery store) and let it steep 3 min. Then I strain the tea into a mug and sweeten.
I also use a blend of spices made of allspice, cardamon, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and peppercorns. I think the peppercorn is what gives chai the "pop" in taste that it has.
My daughter was in India this summer and drank nothing but chai. She said it was always brewed in milk - goat milk - and sweetened with honey.
We baked a spice cake today and had chai tea with it! It must be Fall!! Yea!
