Today me and my husband were on our way to Chattanooga to meet our daughter and her boyfriend to go to the Krystal Eating Competition downtown. I wanted to go because Marshall Tucker Band was playing!!
On the way there not too far from home, a chicken manure truck went past us going the other way. OMG! I thought I was going to get sick! We are on the motorcycle! I could not get away from that stench. I still smell it now. I just got to thinking how those poor chickens, for the whole 6 weeks of their lives, are in all that crap 24/7. Plus the fact that there are dead chickens mixed in, too. I know this because there was manure spread all over the hay fields around my property. I'd take my goats for walks outback of our house and see feet, heads, legs and tons of feathers all over. We stopped walking out there.
I have slowly been adding to my list of places not to go to anymore when I'm in town. I'd dwindled down to just 2. Arby's and Chick-fil-a. Love them. I haven't eaten beef in years unless it's grass-fed from a local guy, so I eat a lot of chicken. Well, after the lightbulb went off, there will be no more Chick-fil-a now.
Oh, and when we got to the competition, there are people with signs about cage-free chickens and trying to make people aware of the confinement operations. It was so neat to see them there. I wanted to stay and help them, but I could here my guys playing . Had to go see them!
BTW, for those who have not heard of Krystal, they are the little square burgers with pickles and onions. A very Southern thing here. I could not tell you what is in the "burger" but it ain't real meat. It's disgusting. The competition has been going on here for years and it's on Fox News. A very big thing. The guy who won ate 93 in 8 minutes!
So I just wanted to say, reading all these great topics has made me more aware of what's going on out there in the world and I want to help change it. For me and my family, one step at a time! It just takes 1 to get the ball rolling.
Has anyone else had these "light bulb moments"?

I am a firm believer in knowing where any type of food come from and how it was grown or raised. I have not bought hamburger meat in so long because everytime I would cook it, it was just funny smelling and the texture was off. I don't really know why but it made me sick to my stomach and then I can't imagine feeding that to my family. I am trying to do better but it is tough with limited resources. Do I spend the extra time and money to go to the organic food stores 35 miles away or just stay local and not buy organic but do my best? I think just being conscious is a big step.

Kris I feel sorry for you about the chickens, unless a person has been thru it one could never imagine how bad it is, Ky had some bad things going on here with the poultry houses, two years ago we went thru H--- with it but I can tell you one little old lady in Knob Lick Ky cleaned up Ky. When I got done with it the goveners office was writing and calling me. I blasted national Tv with it. For two years we have had no problem with them. You do not have to put up with it . Those people are so good to me now they even escort me out the road if I have to go out.Kris we have 12 big poultry houses joining our farm, There would be no way to tell you what all was going on with them. I stopped in the middle of the road and had tractor trailor trucks blocked for two miles and there wasnt a thing they could do about it.

Wilma, good for you!!! I love to see people who are so passionate about something they do something about it! It does just take one person who just won't back down to get things going.
We are surrounded out here by chicken houses. The ones across the road are probably the cleanest around. I have never smelled them. Except when they are cleaning them out.
A few weeks ago a truck turned over going around the sharp curve about a mile from here. With a load of chickens. There are still feathers all over and the smell is awful. And that was 2 weeks ago.
Heather, our big organic store is about 35 miles from me, too. I go about once a month when I'm in town. I always spend at least $100.00 every time. It is expensive, and I don't buy unless it's local. Just do what you can. |

How sad the state of our food. It's all about the money alot of times. I know that some can't help it and are trying to make a living but something needs to be done and things need to get better.
