I am just starting to quilt or at least start looking into it and have been looking at some websites but they sell fabric in Charm packs, fat quarters, layer cakes and jelly rolls. Can anyone tell me what each of these are and what I can make or not make with each different pack?

Hi Sandra,
I know that a fat quarter is 1/4 yard of material cut shaped like a square....that is so it is not a long skinny piece of fabric. It is cut by taking a whole yard and cutting cross wise both ways, making 4 equal pieces, each shaped like a square.
Charms are squares that are all different patterns. On the internet, Ebay is where I go, you can get pre-cut charm squares. They are usually 4 or 5 inch squares...they will all be different patterns but will have a color theme. I enjoy sewing from fabrics bought this way.
I don't know what a jelly roll is or a layer cake... LOL so I'll be reading this post to find out.

I don't know what a layer cake is, but a jelly roll is long strips of each fabric in a collection, all wound up in a jelly roll shape...wonderful for making strip quilts, and log cabins. They are like the charm squares..each one different but all in the same collection. I love them. I am interested to see what a layer cake is!!

Okay, so the charms I know are squares 5" x 5", and the fat quarters I understand but it used to be fabric was 45" and a yard is 36" so is the fabric that they cut the fat quarters from 36" x 36" instead of 45" x 36"? They must be or the fat quarters wouldn't be square...oh! Maybe they aren't square? Okay, and then there's the Jelly Roll...thank you Linda and Aunt Jenny! Now, the layer cake LOOKED like they were piles of squares like the charms only bigger..maybe they are 10 x 10 or 12 x12?
I did see there are books for specifically making things from each of these types of fabrics? I logged on to the Moda fabric site....OMG....beautiful fabrics....I think I love Moda the most...they have some gorgeous retro and juvenile fabric collections and also there was a children at recess quilt kit (retro) and a Mary Engelbreit....but I have too many UFO's to buy a quilt kit plus I don't need to spend the money right now but a girl can dream! I haven't even sewn anything yet and I am wanting to buy all this fabric! Thanks girlfriends!

Moda rocks, such a wonderful collection of fabric designers...I have two...only two, sets of charm squares that I am hoarding..they are too cute and pretty to use...hehe

So....what CAN you make with the different types of fabric bundles? Does anyone know offhand? I have my eye on a couple of Charm packs at the moment.

Hi, a layer cake is like a charm pack but bigger.
Charms can be any were from 2 1/2 inch blocks to 8 inch blocks. Most of the time they are of different fabrics. A layer cake is usually 10 inch blocks or bigger. And again, they can be of different fabrics.
A fat quarter is at least 18 X 22. Some times bigger depending on the company.
With charm packs your patterns can be limitless.
You could start with a simple patchwork quilt. Just sew rows of charms together.

There are a lot of books out there with fat quarter pattern and charm patterns. Check your local library.

Howdy ,
A charm quilt is usually one design and every piece of fabric is different in the entire quilt. so you can see that you would need a lot of different fabrics to make this quilt. so that is where the idea of a charm pack came into. you can buy different charm packs of usually but not always 5x5 inch squares and cut your different design from them or just use them as a square. But that way you can purchase al ot of different fabrics for 1 quilt without a lot of left overs. your jelly rolls were made for people who like to do strip quilts and it eliminates a lot of cutting if you buy the strips already cut for you usually 2 1/2 inches by 45 or the width of the fabric. The layer cake is normally 10 x 10 inch pieces of a particular line of fabrics so you get one of each print in that line and that size will usually cut a few of your pieces to add to your quilt. so again you don't have a lot of left overs. All so you get to put a lot of different prints into a quilt that maybe you would not be able to buy otherwise. so it does make it really nice to be able to afford the different fabrics. All of you gals are MARVELOUS....SIMPLY MARVELOUS...in fact..."too marvelous for words"! LOL! I have learned SO much just from this one posting....just think how smart I'll be if I stick with you gals!?!?!?
I did order a little kit from www.mountainpatchwork.com thinking it was a little project and would get me hand-quilting fast and give me some practice but again ....I think I got in over my head...it is paper-piecing which I think I can do but it wasn't what I thought it was but thank goodness they included the templates! WHEW...when I was reading the instructions I thought I would have to cut templates for all of it. Plus, the fabric that came in the kit is not the same as what they showed in the picture of the finished item....a little dissappointed with that but I'm hoping it will turn out nice. They didn't have the kit I really wanted and said they were discontinuing it but they do sell the pattern so if this one turns out I may buy the pattern for the other one. And now that I know what the charm packs, jelly rools, fat quarters and layer cakes are I think I will HAVE to order a couple of those but how do I choose???? There were so many patterns I liked....Moda especially and their 30's fabric and one called Recess...LOVE, LOVE LOVE!!!!! I found them on www.fatquarters.com that was suggested on another post. Now I have more websites I can check out...Thank you to all!

Good luck with your paper piecing. It can be very easy and sometimes frustrating. But I think the results are almost always a perfect block.

Kathy I checked your blog...WOW! You are a REAL quilter...what beautiful items and I really loved your purses!!!! Where did you get the patterns for those!?!? I have no business thinking about another project but a girl can dream! And from what I hear it's going to be a long winter so I have to "plan ahead"! LOL!
