Hi, I belong to United Plant Savers and just got my goldenseal roots in the mail. Has anyone grown it or are you growing it and what can you tell me about your success with the plant? It is on the endangered list, I know that much and that it likes forest soil with leaf mulch and not boggy or marshy soil.

I don't know how to grow it, but my DH's grandmother used to make a medicene from it for canker sores in your mouth. Worked great, tasted blechk.

United Plant Savers is an organization that was developed by herbalist Rosemary Gladstar. The mission of UpS is to save herbs that are in danger of becoming extinct due to poor logging practices, over population etc - Pop United Plant Savers in a search enging like Google.com and it will take you to the site. I did an article on it in the Fall 08 issue of Herb Quarterly magazine called Plants in Peril. Also check out the book, Planting the Future by Rosemary Gladstar - it is offered for sale on the UpS site.
I am a member of UpS and every year they offer endangered herbs to members for only shipping cost. The two goldenseal cost me $10 - I have to get them in the ground, probably tomorrow.

I grow and wildcraft Oregon Grape. It has the same properties as Goldenseal, but is not endangered. It grows great here is the northwest and is free to wildcraft lots of places.
That is so cool that you are getting endangered plants from plant savers. Love Rosemary's teachings!!!

I want to grow goldenseal, also. I still haven't finished building my herb garden, so nothing is planted in it yet. But I have a corner that is under a pine tree and I think it would be a perfect spot.
I was given dried goldenseal powder once and told to stir it into boiling water, let it cool, then "snort" a teaspoon up each nostril to get rid of a bad sinus infection. I wasn't sure I could purposely suck liquid up my nose and I had to wait for the right time when I could actually breathe through my nose before I could do it. But it worked like a charm. Stings a bit, but the infection was gone the next morning!

Found a lovely shady place with lots of humusy (sp) soil and leaf mulch in the forest to plant my goldenseal roots. They were nice and yellow but they do look like such delicate little things! I hope they flourish where I have planted them. I will need to make a marker so I can remember where they are. I hear the deer probably will not bother them as the plant when it surfaces is bitter.
