I have some ginger root and noticed what looks like 3 little root-like nodules. 2 of them have green coming out kind of like a bulb. I was wondering if I can grow them here. I just put them in little pots.
Has any ever done this? Please tell me how.

Very interesting question. I'll do some "digging" on my garden site and see if anyone has heard of it. I love fresh ginger. I don't see why it wouldn't grow. I wonder what the leaf looks like. I would guess like a potato....you'll have to keep me posted!

| Kristin, I have heard that you can take a piece of store bought ginger root and put it in a pot of soil and it will grow. However, a guy told me it took about 18 months for it to do anything. Eighteen months?? Be interested to hear what Lisa finds on the subject. |

Ok...I got the scoop....
Ginger will grow from store bought roots. They like full sun, but if temps are really high, they prefer pt. shade. They are extreemly slow growing, 8 months will grow about 1'. They look like bamboo to me.

Are they cold hardy? Would they live here in zone 4 or 5?

If you get frost in your zone, I'd keep them in pots and bring them inside when it gets cold. If you plant them in the ground when they are young, they will surely freeze. Slow growing plants are great for pots. I'm planting some today just to see what will happen!
