I adore autumn! It is most
assuredly my favorite
time of year and as you can imagine, being a Florida
native, not one I
get to experience often. I knew that the leaves
would not have changed
yet when I came to TN/KY(2007) and when I come back in
Nov. it will be too
late. Interestingly enough, as I drove into the
Smokies, approaching
Chattanooga, it was as though I could see the
magnificent autumn colors
trying to break through.
Everything was still that dark, dark green but in my
mind's eye, I could
see the reds and golds. It stirred me deeply and it
also brought to
mind the change we humans go through (especially us
women) as we enter
our autumn years. There is that period in between
that is so dreary and
boring but if we look harder something is trying to
break through.

I knew then and there that I had to capture that
experience as best I
could. So here it is (though it needs tweaking),
bearing my soul to you all, my poem:

Autumn by Chris Roberson

There it is
There, just under the surface
Undulating, pulsating
Calling out to be seen

Cloaked in its former array
Now a facade
Trusting that the hungry will see
Will recognize
And be moved

Yes, it is a little early
And to the shallow
Nothing spectacular
No not even special

But I,
Oh I see them clearly
I recognize and glory in
The hills, waiting
To repel their drab, worn green
To adorn themselves in splendor
Ruby, bronze, gold and copper
Precious colors
Colors of value and worth

So like the proverbial autumn years
No longer the exciting
Brilliant, yellow hued green of spring
The innocent flush of bloom
No, that has faded
And the current appearance doesn't
Cause much of a stir
It is tired, drained
Perhaps, dull

But, there
Just there
Grandeur is about to appear
Lines of life
Evidence of laughter
And tears
A silver crown of glory
Like an elegant frame
On a beautiful portrait
Announcing to all that
This season is the finest of all
A season of value and worth

thanks all for your kind words, they are appreciated! I always travel to KY or TN for fall and spring because I just can't miss the beauty of those two seasons. I adore autumn leaves and those breathtaking colors and I also love the dogwoods, redbuds and blossoming flowers of spring. The first year we owned land in KY we closed on it in spring. I had loads of dogwoods in full bloom and went up to each and every one of them and said, "that's MY dogwood!" I was thrilled and felt like I was dreaming LOL!
