~~~a HOME!
I really love our Home....and I wondered WHAT everyone thinks makes a House a Home for THEM?? There is a very Meaningful Poem by Edgar Guest that hangs in my home..................
~~~It takes a heap o'livin' in a house t' make it home,
A heap o' sun an' shadder, an' ye sometimes have t' roam
Afore ye really 'preciate the things ye lef' behind,
An' hunger fer 'em somehow, with 'em allus on yer mind,
It don't make any differunce how rich ye get t' be
How much yer chairs an' tables cost, how great yer luxury;
It ain't home t' ye, though it be the palace of a king,
Until somehow yer soul is sort o' wrapped round everything,

Home ain't a place that gold can buy or get up in a minute;
Afore it's home there's got t' be a heap o' living in it;
Within the walls there's got t' be some babies born, and then
Right there ye've got t' bring 'em up t' women good, an' men;
And gradjerly, as time goes on, ye find ye wouldn't part
With anything they ever used-they've grown into yer heart:
The old high chairs, the playthings, too, the little shoes they wore

Ye hoard; an' if ye could ye'd keep the thumbmarks on the door.
Ye've got t' weep t' make it home, ye've got t' sit an' sigh
An watch beside a loved one's bed, an' know that Death is nigh;
An' in the stillness o' the night t' see Death's angel come,
An' close the eyes o' her that smiled, an' leave her sweet voice dumb.
Fer these are scenes that grip the heart, an' when yer tears are dried,
Ye find the home is dearer than it was, an' sanctified;
An' tuggin' at ye always are the pleasant memories
O' her that was an' is no more-ye can't escape from these.

Ye've got t' sing and dance fer years, ye've got t' romp and play,
An' learn t' love the things ye have by usin' 'em each day;
Even the roses 'round the porch must blossom year by year
Afore they 'come a part o' ye, suggestin' someone dear
Who use t' love 'em long ago, an' trained 'em jes' t' run
The way they do, so's they would get the early mornin' sun;
Ye've got t' love each brick 'an stone from cellar up t' dome:

IT TAKES a HEAP o' LIVIN' in a HOUSE t' MAKE it HOME!

This Poem has significant meaning to me and I wonder >>>
What Makes a house a "HOME" to EACH of YOU?

Until Later,

My husband and I have moved around a lot since 2002. We have found that the things that make a house a home for us, is whether we are comfortable or not. If we are comfortable, then we love our house. A little yard is important, a good kitchen. But over all, it is our attitudes towards each other and the property that make the house homey or not. If we are always mad at each other- we don't really want to be home.

NM Audrey, that's funny I've been thinking about calling myself Colorado Audrey!

I think what makes a house a home is being surrounded by things that bring back memories of loved ones. The majority of my furniture has belonged to one family member or another and then given to me, or bought as a gift by a family member. So many times when I look at a piece or sit on a sofa, I think of the loved one who owned it before. It's like little hugs from the people I love.

Thank you for sharing that poem. Mom used to quote that first line ( I think when she was trying to get me to help with housework) but I had never seen the rest of it. Peace is what makes a house home to me. Shelter from all of the crazy things in the world.

My kids were not raised in this house. However, where do they come, HERE, Home. Home is where Mom and Dad are or where we feel they are. One of my sons and his wife live in my Mom and Dad's home. That is not home to me anymore????? My home is here, my kids come here, my grandkids come here. OK, I don't know. Home is where the heart is?

I feel similar to Janneane, when we come in the door and we say, east or west home is best, and we feel like we are free from the whirlwind that the world puts on us...and we never forget it is a gift to have a place we love to shelter us...of course I have a little plaque someone gave me years ago that says, a home without a cat is just a house, our fur babies make it so much more pleasurable. All the people that come and go fill the house with life...Debbie

My grown boys have never lived here...but they have said this is home to them anyhow cuz Mom is here (awwww) and it smells right, looks right (I have the same dishes they grew up with..and lots of family stuff) and feels right. I hope someday they live closer than they do, but I am glad that this IS home when they can come here. (can you tell I have been missing them alot today?)

~~~Home Sweet Home! To me there's nothing to compare! It warms my heart to hear what "HOME" means to all of you ...
I find as I too think about this, it involves a great deal of "Soul Searching".......I DO have eons to share cause I've had this very poem on an Ole Fashioned Paper and frame in my home for many years. I have always felt it encouraged me to think........so I'm going to leave it (My Thoughts) here for now and Murmur more about the sense of "Place" I feel the word HOME conjures up to me...........
Sooooo my Farmgirl Friends ....I'll be back again to add more (and do a little more thinking on it) and hope that a Greater Number post your thoughts........
as there is nothing that can Warm our hearts up More, than discussing a word like... HOME!
Until Later,
ME makes my house my home.
I like my home a lot. I live alone with my sweet kitten Elvis. It is the first time in my life I live alone, and I like it. Don't love it, but like it.
I can make my own decisions where to put my furniture, WHAT furniture I want. Pick up decorations I like, change them as often as I like.
My home is my cozy surroundings. My home is my castle, be it a small one. LOL
Hello Marian/Dutchy! I can't remember if you have mentioned which name you prefer?? Goodness, I would say it is perfectly fine to use the poem, as long as you credit Edgar Guest as the Author! I think it is such a wonderful Poem and poetry is Best when shared!!
~~No matter where we have lived the last 37 years...in houses that have been tiny and large....For us it has never been about the Physical Structure....When we had little, we did LOTS, by stretching our imaginations (cause we didn't have much else to stretch!!) ...we redid, reinvented, reupholstered, revamped!.............it has always been about the "FEELING" in our home.... It's been about the caring for each other...Home to me is a Place where the people inside do not judge you by your money, looks, or material belongings. I Doooo so love my favorite books and my special antiques and a warm blanket to cuddle up in by the fire, but it is .......Family, Friends, both Old and New.... and Memories, that begin the first day we walk in, to our house that, ALWAYS BECOMES our HOME!!
How many on the Forum have heard this poem before? And.............
do any of you have poems that have "struck at your heart" or along the way, Made Ya Think about Life? I found this poem when I was first married and I remember how it just tugged at my heart and felt so meaningful to what life should be, that I gave it a place starting with Dave's and my first Home!'
If you have one that you really Liked or Still Adore!...Maybe you too could share it with us! If ya don't have it handy and you know who it is by or the name of the poem, you can just Google it and it will pop up right there for ya!
Until Later,
New Mexico Audrey
