I had to make a dr. appointment for one of my kids today, and since it was last minute I didn't have time to find a sitter so I had all 5 with me. They are all super well behaved, but as I was leaving, I had to race after my 2yo when he made a break for the parking lot. Two business men were walking by, watching me struggle to grab the little one's arm, and holding my 1yo, with the other three trailing behind. One of them shook his head and said, 'Too many kids!'. I couldn't believe the nerve. I replied very tartly, 'No such thing. I just don't have enough arms.' I was very shaken up and angry by this man's blunt rudeness. Maybe next time, he'll hold the door for me instead of watching me struggle to grab the handle.

Molly, If it'll make you feel any better...my Thomas would have opened the door and politely caught the one racing away. But he has a very nurturing soul...alot of men do not. sorry that happened to you.

Ok...my first response would have been to slap him in his head!!! He's probably an only child....nice comeback though!

OK, be careful! I have only one child -- but that doesn't mean that he is rude to women or mothers or anyone else.

Molly, so sorry you had such an encounter. In such cases, I always think to myself, "Glad I'm not married to HIM!" Like Stephanie, I am married to a nurturing soul -- and am raising one as well. I don't think rudeness is confined to the male of the species.

Great response, Molly. That's the kind of response I usually think of afterward, when it's too late. Good for you.

We have four boys, and the last three are in a row (6,5,3.5) and we ALWAYS HEAR "lord have mercy" and "what a handfull". My oldest son Noah, who's 10.5, has grown impatient with those rude comments and has taken it upon himself to say "The lord did have mercy, that's why he gave those boys to my momma, cause he knew she'd take care of them" and "mom's arms are strong enough to care for all of us". I want to get a shirt that say "yes, they're all mine, yes they're all boys, No girls but me, no I'm not "trying" for a girl"...

Paige- that is so funny! I can tell you get asked that all the time! I think we all find our own happiness in the situations the life gives us. Right now Nora is just right for us, but hopefully someday she will have little siblings. I enjoyed having a large family growing up, but I bet just as many people loved being an only child.

The _least_ that guy could have done was refrain from commenting until out of earshot- or better yet- held the door open!

Molly- You are an amazing mom and I bet your kids will be more welcome back in that office than many others!

Rene what a great quote - I have written that one down.....

I have a sign in my shop that says "Is there an Excuse for you?"

I look at it this way - hopefully he is not having kids so that line will die out. We can only hope. I never would band one of my male animals because I could never put them thru the band but I sure have known many two legged males who I would have not hesitated a moment to stop the line...

Hugs to you and yours and keep that quick wit.

Wow, what a jerk. I would have had to say something meaner, like,"Funny, I don't remember asking for your opinion."
I'd take 5 well behaved kids around, over one out of control kid anyday.

AAAA!! Ladies, some of these responses are just hilarious! I am taking notes. I, too, get lots of comments (although none so rude as the one mentioned in the OP until today) and I agree; a tshirt needs to be made to answer all the questions. Or one that just says 'None of your business'....seriously, folks, don't ask me if I'm going to have any more, because that's a conversation I'll have with my husband, not the cashier at Walmart. You guys cheered me right up! Nice to have the farmgirls on your side.

There is just no excuse for rudeness like that..what was he raised by wolves??? If I were his Mama I would slap him upside the head and make him apologise. For crying out loud. Just rude. I even get comments now and then (mostly when we go to Calif to visit) about having 4 kids close in age.(11, 11, 12 and 13 now) Uh..mine are adopted and NO not triplets and a spare..and NO they didn't "run me crazy as toddlers" ..jeesh...some people.

You go Molly. My kids are 3, 2 and 4 months and I always get the looks as well as "now that you got your girl I guess your done" (Mine are 2 boys then a girl). I always tell them my boys are just as special as my gal and I actually fully intend on having more if God should bless us. The great reformer Martin Luther said "those who don't like children are dunces and blockheads" Amen Mr Luther.
Amazing that the greatest blessing out there actually becomes a problem to people.

great job molly i never come up with a comeback until thirty seconds or more later and wish i could have said it. i used to get looks for being a young mom at twenty cause i looked younger and i didnt wear my ring to many times it caught the kids and scratched them. anymore i tend to not notice and only focus on the positive comments. proud of you girl for getting them all to the doctors office. i have a hard time with just three of them and two of them are 6 and 8 years old the littlest is six months. your a great mom

Not rude.......how about ignornat. As in ignorant SOB

Anyone with proper upbringing would have opened the door/caught or asssisted w/ the child and maybe given a complement rather than an insult.

I truly believe ALL males starting fron the age of 12/13 ought to be forced to take a sensitivity course....similar to what all milirary must do. Manners begin at home but it never hurts to have them reinforced

Good comeback, Molly, What can I say, that fellow was just rude. Some of the other comments people make are more of a, open mouth, isert foot kind. They're probably not trying to be rude, they just aren't thinking before they comment. It's funny nowadays, everyone has to tell you what they think, even if you really don't care, lol
I read something years ago about a parent who had eight children. This man was confronted in an elevator by another man who hotly asked him, just who he was, overpopulating the earth the with eight children, that was just too many children. The father of the eight children replied, he was blessed to have been given his eight children and who was he or the stranger to question it. After all, he said, you don't know if one of these children will grow up to conquer one or more of mankinds greatest challenges. They might find a cure for cancer, become a world peacekeeper, unlock the secrets of the universe. Or simply become a decent, loving human being who shares that with the world.

My heart goes out to you. I struggle everyday with the frustrating men who won't help with children. I could go on and on about that but I won't.

Forgive me if this is too "political" but I liked a bumper sticker I saw that said
"If Mary had a abortion we wouldn't have Christmas" That one made me think!

Linda, How true!
My sister and I gave our folks a 40th anniversary party a few weeks ago and We both gave a speech, or "toast". At the end of mine I thanked them for having us. Not only for chosing to stay pregnant, but chosing to get pregnant. And now we chose to honor them, their love and commitment and parenting.

How rude of him! I have three little ones (4, 3, and 4 months) and have been asked a couple times if we are "done". While I honestly think these strangers were not trying to be rude I feel that is a personal matter, and always answer no, since I will be happy to take what God gives me. Children really are a blessing and while that rude, rude man may be saying that now...what will he say when he is 90 years old sitting in a nursing home with no visitors because he chose not to have children or only has one or two children that turned out as selfish as him? Children are the ONLY things on this earth that we can take to heaven with us.
