I was wondering if anyone knew if I had to do anything special to put an asparagus bed to bed for the winter.I put in 2 year old roots this spring and I can't find anything saying what I have to do for the winter. If I should mow it down and mulch it or leave it?Thanks for any replies. Alicia
Cut it right to the ground asap. Asparagus beetles overwinter in the top growth, so don't compost the large fronds. Mulch heavily with well-rotted manure and straw...lots of it! Cow and horse manure is apparently the best, but I use chicken with good success. Can't wait to taste those first green spears again...I can't believe I actually got sick of it last spring!!
