I guess I will chime in on this one. Monica adding lanolin after the fact is not the same thing. The interesting part of wool with is't lanolin still on it has also to do with the folics of the wool. When we wash the wool we change the texture of the wool and the lanolin that you purchase is processed and will only get the fiber gross. Mother Nature does it best. I would suggest if you are making the pinchusion you start with good covered fleece. Smell the wool because lanolin traps smells and if the animals are not kept clean you will have a horrible smelling pincushion. Side note - if you wish to have really sharp needles the best thing to stuff a pincushion with is metal file. Also, it is better to use all wool inside and out then to pass a needle thru cotton. Hope that helps.

]Okay, if I did this right here are pictures of the other yarn I have spun so far and this is Bam Bam!

Grace, thanks for the input!! I don't think I can list files on etsy but I may have to come up with my own design for all wool pin cushions!! I need to find out more from you about shearing! I told Dan who owns Bam Bam about how you do it and he was very interested!

Monica, Bam Bam is of Dorset line - that classic nose is the give a way.

The yarn looks wonderful - keep it up. Let me know how else to assist.

Grace,First off I hope you are feeling better!
Is it hard to shear them with scissors! As I said Dan was very interested in doing that and I said I would find out more from you! I want to bring Bam Bam home with me! Look at what you all have started! Who would have thought I would be wanting a sheep!!!! Is his wool good for spinning!
I do want to get the Fricke wheel from you! Do you know how much shipping and insurance would be? I will e-mail you more about the wheel. Thank you for the compliment on the yarn!

You girls are going to go "whaattt?" but I just caught onto the amusement park "talk"...I had been scratching my head over that for a couple of read-throughs and wondering if something got mis-posted or if I was losing it--how wool had anything to do with an amusement park was beyond me! Now I see it on the first post! Duh.

Hey Monica,
Bam Bam is a nice looking sheep. I have spun Dorset and enjoyed it to make socks, heavy winter socks. You know sheep are flock animals and he will need a friend????

Get out there and find Bam Bam. He NEEDS you girl. Wait!!!! I am on my way.......we are gonna go catch us some sheep rustlers. How dare they take him. Was he left alone at the market all night by himself? Surely somebody would have sense enough not to do that?? That just ticks me off that somebody would take him. Keep us updated okay?

Such said news but I wished that did not happen in this day and age but it happens more often then we would like. We had an Icelandic breeders who had her whole flock stolen the second year after I purchased mine - made everyone very scared and watchfull. That is why I have a llama and great pry in every pasture and locked gates. I hope BamBam is found safe and secure but most times these things do not turn out they way we wished. Last year alone in my county there was more then 60 reports of stollen animals - now remember some folks do not understand critters are stollen by four leggeds too..

Grace,
That is just awful. I just can't imagine a whole flock going missing. Do people not tattoo or microchip their flock? I think that I would be visiting every farm in the state until I found mine, if they were mine.
Okay Grace, I have a question for you that I've been wondering about. Please don't think me dumb or silly for asking, but Llama's seem to be such gentle, mild mannered animals. Exactly, how would they protect a flock of sheep? They don't seem like something to be afraid of and I would think they would also be easy targets for 4 legged rustlers. I can see the great pyr doing a great job though, just his/her presence is enough.

I found out this morning that there is a possibility that Bam Bam got loose! I am waiting to hear back from Dan to see if he wants pictures of him to put up fliers around town just in case anyone has seen him! I really hope they find him!

Hi Brenda I posted a reply but it did not show up, not sure what happened. When the flock was stolen micro chips where not availble and ear tags can be pulled out and replaced. Besides most of the time animals stollen will not show up in normal channels but we do keep our eyes always peeled for that type of thing.

As for the llamas first you have to understand that just because they are a llama that does not mean they will guard, next they have to have an interest in the animals under their charge. Next, you have to work with them, just like livestock guard dogs. You can not just leave them out in a field and hope they understand. I also leave their fighting teeth in which gives them six barbed teeth to rip with. Now how a llama guards is they are incredible about sounds and smells so they see trouble coming. Next they let out an alarm call which gives most two or four legged monsters reason to run. Then this 250 pound animal places his head down close to the ground and with the speed of a charging bull he screams he call and plows into the monster. Once on the ground he raises up and with all his weight stomps the critter into the ground while using his teeth to rip at the throat. Scarey!!!

To give you an example we had a new UPS man show up and he went thru my big gates before I could get out there and "LB" my llama boy came from around the house at a charge. I ran and got between him and the UPS man. The UPS guy took out running to the gates and closed them quickly. LB was standing behind my head screaming and blowing - what a site. Once I got the UPS guy to catch his breath I explained that the sign on the gate was real and that until LB knew him he was not to go thru the gate. Llamas also seem to scare folks because they are not known and I love that because I have security 24/7. If my dogs don't get my my llama will.....

What is funny about LB is he still takes his afternoon nap with Mishka (the little baby goat) but don't tell anyone.

Grace, I loved the UPS man story!! LOL Years ago I had a super large rooster that was my "guard"..This little guy hatched out and became my shadow as he grew up....if anyone walked through the gate it was hell to pay..and of course, my UPS man found out the hard way too...I heard a rukas outside, went running to find "Buffy" flogging the UPS man..it wasn't funny to him but it was all I could do not to howl with laughter. And I had a sign on my gates warning of the guard..guess he thought it was joke.

Oh I love it Stephanie - A guard rooster - what a special guy - I had a turkey who would not let my husband into the barn - one day he forgot that and when my husband walked in Little Larry went after him. We got cut up and beaten up and finally the only way I save my husband was I had to take a shovel and hit Larry. I broke his neck and still he kept coming - Horrible as it was it took a dozen hits until he stopped. When he passed away my husband (the chicken he was) made me be the bad guy and tell my son Nick that I had killed his turkey while on a skiing trip. Nick said " Dad, you are not to go near the animals again" and yes that was the last day Curt ever forgot he was not to go near the animals. We burded Little Larry and Nick planted a rose bush on top of the grave. Folks just do not realize how loyal birds are... Thanks Stephanie for sharing you rooster...

lol About the Rooster, we had Barn Swallows that used to live on our front porch. About 20 years ago when I got my first pc, I didn't let my dog in the house the usual time I usually did. And she was barking, and I really had a witch of a neighbor (I let her get by with a lot of things, but if I misstepped just a little bit she would call the police on me! She was mad at me, because I turned in her good friend and our neighbor of molesting me! Which he did for the first 12 years of my life! But, she believed him over me! And to which I got a restraining order against, and since he was renting his house from my grandma, she kicked him out, the neighbor was upset he was not allowed to come visit her cause of my restraining order! Any way long story there). Any way........the dog was barking and it was like 8 pm. So she called the police. The police came to my door.....at the time we also had a HUGE spider who lived on our porch. He ate bugs so we never killed him. Every night he would make a huge web going clear across the front of the porch, we would knock it down every morning so we could get off the porch.

Any way, the police man knocks on the door. I get to the door to look out the window to see who it is, and I see the police man ducking and waving his flash light around and all kinds of weird things. I open the door and he was so nervous he thought I was the one that called. lol And I didn't tell him other wise. And tells me spiders and BATS are attacking him! lol First the spider never attacked any one, he just probably walked through the web, which I know can be creepy. lol And then I told him that it was NOT bats, it was barn swallows and they were protecting their babies and nest. lol And they wouldn't hurt him. But, he was still nervous and scared! lol And as soon as he left, I went and put the dog inside, as I could tell that was what it was about. And then I also knew which neighbor had called, cause he called me by her name and said he was coming to check out the situation for me. (I didn't call, and my name wasn't her's so, I knew what it was).

Never mind for over a year I never called on her when her son's "ride" would come to pick him up at 3am and honk his horn obnoxiously for a entire hour! To get his son to come out! And I was in school and needed to be sleeping at those hours! UHG!

But, any way that is my guard bird story! lol
