Is everyone in the Skagit area okay?

A dear friend of mine likes to frequent the Shell station in Alger where one of the victims was shot. He walked in just moments after the killing.

My uncle emailed last night saying that one of my aunt's nieces was found dead in her truck and her husband inside the house, wounded.

For those who hadn't heard, six people were killed, including a sheriff's deputy, and two wounded, one the husband above and the other a state trooper, after a mentally ill man went on a shooting spree. His mother had been trying for years to get him help. He was a known criminal. But...local prosecutor has been loudly and steadfastly denying to hold hearings on those claimed by their doctors and family members to be mentally ill and in need of care. He has said that he does not have the budget to fund all of the necessary legal work that must be done in order to get the mentally ill put in a place where they can't be a danger to others.

Tracey I am so sorry about your family members, even though they are distant. I am terribly sorry.
People who are mentally I'll are not all dangerous, but those that are, need to be properly cared for, including putting them in a living facility that will give them proper care and medication to keep this kind of thing from happening.

It is a terrible tregedy

Tracey, I've been following this story on the news. I am sorry to hear that your aunt's niece and her husband were victims of this sick person. It's one of those surreal stories that a person almost can't "digest" easily or make any sense of...so random. It seems law enforcement has done a great job with the investigation and caught the man who did this quickly considering at first I heard he was on the loose. I thought it was great they were on the news right after it happened wanting to inform the public of the status so far...even though they couldn't divulge much, it was good that they thought of public safety first since he was still on the loose then.

Thanks Annika. I'd never met her, so I'm not going through any emotional upheaval like I would if I'd known them. I was relieved to find out my friend wasn't one of those shot. All I'd heard was that someone at the Shell station had been killed and my heart nearly stopped.

Maybe now the county where this tragedy took place will make more of an effort to evaluate those people declared mentally ill AND unstable. I mean, come on, with that guys background, (history of criminal behavior etc..) and the fact that his OWN family, along with at least ONE doctor felt he should be committed for the safety of the community, HOW could the judge not have tried to at least do SOMETHING? If each person were evaluated on a case by case basis, then it shouldn't cost THAT much. What's better to fund? A place for these people to be treated, or builing more PRISONS to house them once they've commited such heinous crimes? Sad. So VERY sad. I hope that judge who refused to deal with that person sleeps well at night. (NOT!!!)

My daughter used to live at that exit and boy does that bring it home for me. She no longer lives there, but it really makes you think about how tenuous life can be. People minding their own business, going about their daily lives, gone in an instant. My heart goes out to all of their friends and families.
