Hi everyone! Now that we're getting back into the school year again (is it really possible that summer's over already??!!), I am curious as to how much time homeschoolers "typically" (if there's such a thing as a typical homeschooler!) spend with their kids "doing school." Do you just give your kids the work to be done, have them do it, and then check it? Do you sit with them for some subjects and leave others for them to do independently? I have a 5th grader and an 11th grader this year, and I think I'm going to be spending a lot of my day sitting with them. That's just always seemed to work better for us. I mean, they do have things that they do independently, but usually I'll go through that day's lesson for each subject with them, and then let them do the actual, hands-on work themselves - i.e. math problems, reading and answering questions in U.S. History, etc. Although even with reading, I think I'm going to be spending some time with my 11-grader reading aloud with him, especially in subjects like Economics, so that we can discuss what we're reading. I just want to be sure that he's really "getting" it, and not just skimming it. I do find that I'm spending a large portion of my day with them, but given the age difference, it's difficult to find much that they can do together to save time. Anyway, just curious as to what some of you might do.

Hey Jenny,
I usually sit either next to or very close by my kids when they are doing the work. Most of their work this year requires the lesson to be taught first because I didn't get any material that was child led (something they could just open up and do). Once I get the lessons taught, I let them go with it as much as they feel comfortable with, but normally stay very close by because there is usually a question or two. I just want to make sure they fully understand what is being taught. My kiddos seem to do better with me sitting beside them. Whenever they are doing math, I let them do as many pages as they like if they fully understand it, but when there are mistakes, we have what I like to call "do overs." I know everybody does it different though. Best wishes on a new school year! :) Oh and I forgot to say that I have a 5th grader and a 7th grader.

Hi Jenny!
I spend a lot of time with my children as they're schooling as well. We use our kitchen as our schoolroom and when I assign my 9th grader his work and teach the lesson, I allow him to work independently while I get back to my activities. But I'm always there on hand to redirect or assist him. Of course, once I begin school with my youngest son who has special needs, it is one-on-one for his entire school day.

Hey Jenny, I'm starting our 4th yr homeschooling and I think every year has been a little different. My boys are in the 9th and 6th grade and this year it seems like they have needed me to stay closer because of questions or other type of help. I have always stayed pretty close and as Lea said I always like to assist when needed. This year with the work being a little harder it has taken us longer each day to complete our work but I hope the more they get used to the work it will be easier for us all. I like knowing what is going into my kids so I would not change a thing. I hope and pray your year will be plentiful. Blessings, Karen

Jenny I have two children. A 7th and an 11th grader. With certain subjects I definitly find myself sitting there with them. Then there are others that they are capable of doing more on their own. Either way I am never more than a room away if they need my assistance. Our school day never last all day though. Maybe 3 hours of book work and then the rest is more hands on learning and exploring.

I usually am very nearby- I just don't want it to be dull. I only have a 10th grader-last of 5 kids- and much of his work he can do without me.
 OK- I hover- it's a habit-26 yrs of teaching at home !!
Anyway this year has been hard- soooo many interruptions and still we are juggling them. He's smart and fast so once the weather turns cold he'll do double duty. Some years are just like that .
We usually work from 8:30-12- then he's on his own for reports,essays and research or correction work. I'm off till morning-from school anyway.

| I have a 4th grader and a second grader and even though we use A Beka dvds I am always close by to answer and explain what they dont understand. Always more with the second grader then the 4th grader. I can get some laundry folded or dishes washed in between though. |
