Well, between pooping and peeing over a dozen times over the past 3 weeks, I put my foot down. I took her to the vet and they agree she has a urinary tract and poop problem that will cost a LOT of $$$ to fix. I wrote hubby an email and told him I would wait until he got here but I could no longer do this. She is suffering. She threw up 2 times this past week and the whole pooping/peeing thing is bothering me because I only left for 45 minutes to run to the store. I always let her poop and pee before and after I get back, so there shouldn't be a problem. It is not bevahorial either. She gets walked, played with and loved.

I am waiting to hear back from hubby. As you all know, this is our only issue we butt heads on. Please help me stand my ground on this. I really don't need the added stress and extra work and he can't understand that but then he has not been around most of time dealing with this. Thanks.

You are doing everything by yourself, and taking great care of Charlie. With all the stresses you've had lately you don't need a sick dog on top of everything else. It is hard to have to do everything on your own, especially when raising a little one. You stand firm girl...there's just so much any one woman can deal with.

Well today was it for me. I had workers coming to repair some vinyl in the bathroom and I usually put Chloe up because a lot of workers are afraid of dogs and I didn't want her in the way. I put on her collar and leash, let the workers in and then went to put her in the garage. It is not hot today, so she can stay there for awhile. She wouldn't budge, so I growled at her and told her to come...she pulled harder away...so I "bit" her, as in gently nipping her skin on the top of her neck. That usually works. She wouldn't budge AND she growled at me...NEVER has she growled at me...not even in play. I grab her front legs to walk her to the garage and she bit me...not breaking skin but enough to leave a mark. I smartly smacked her on the snout with my flip flop and dragged her to the garage. NEVER NEVER NEVER has she EVER EVER EVER bit me...ever..I just can't take any chances with Charlie. If she is feeling bad and sick, I understand but I cannot tolerate her nipping at Charlie or anyone else for that matter or possibly doing worse. She has not been listening and I am done trying to train her. She was well trained and I kept at it but it is not working anymore. I told Scott that I will keep her going until he gets here (7 weeks), keeping her outside as much as I can or in the garage and then he needs to put her down. I cannot deal with this anymore. Please do not judge me, I am really struggling with this.

Heather if you read my blog you will see with my latest entry I TOTALLY understand, we got a puppy last week and she lunged at the 3yo next door.As much as I loved her and how good she was to and for ME, i couldnt take that chance eitiher.

You and hubby needs to understand you are ONE person! Dont beat yourself up.You can only do so much. And once the biting starts I'm sorry you should have no tolerence for that with a small one in the house. Hugs!!

Thanks Amanda. I put her out in the garage because right now, I am dealing with vinyl installation, school and a project for tomorrow. I am so angry right now, I felt it best just to get her out of my site for awhile. I never had to put an animal down and don't even know how to begin. I don't want to deal with guilt at the vet as they ask me why. It is so hard. I don't know what to do.

She is snapping at you and you have a small child. That is reason enough. Yes is sucks, but what would suck more is an ER trip becuase your hand got mangled or worse even so Charlie. Hang in there . If she is in pain you dont want her to suffer either.Hang in there

I just went to check on her and she pooped all over the garage. She has only been out there for about 1 hour now, so no reason, when I JUST walked her. How do I got about putting her down? I have no clue. What kinds of questions will they ask? Costs? I don't have a lot of money right now.

Sounds like the dog is not well Heather. AND it sounds as if she's just miserable. Chloe is not living a happy life as a dog should and it's not YOUR fault. Sounds like you've given her the best life possible but she's just going down hill. Now that she's snapping and growling-- it's time to have something done. You might not even be able to wait until Hubby comes home.

Putting an animal "to sleep" is very humane and the kindest thing you can do for an animal that is suffering. Chloe can't TELL you what's wrong, but obviously she is NOT a happy dog. I Know what it's like to have to face that choice. I had a dog that I ADORED and that I'd had since she was a tiny puppy. I raised and loved her for over 7 years. When she went totally blind very suddenly, I took her to the vet who diagnosed her with "Lymphocarcoma" (Lymphatic cancer-- VERY NASTY STUFF and quick acting). He wanted to try all these treatments and other things, but I put my foot down, not just because of the cost, but because the outcome would be the same no matter what-- there was no hope of a cure, just proloning her suffering. I told that vet "Just give her what she needs to be comfortable, but when she stops eating, (she LOVED food!!) I'm bringing her back and I want you to put her to sleep." He finally agreed that was the right thing to do.

The last two weeks of her life were good ones. She went on vacation with us to the coast for 4 days. She never complained. She rode 4 hours in the backseat of my car and had only ever been in the car when she needed to go to the vet for shots, and the time she got kicked by the horse and spent a week in the vets office being treated. She was NOT a car riding dog. When we got back from vacation, her follow up vet appointment was that Monday. She stopped eating two days before her visit. I cried all the way to the vets office. I knew in my heart that it was time, and I think SHE did too. She laid in the front seat and just stared at me, even though she couldn't SEE me. It was almost as if she were saying "It's ok. I'm ready to go now." I held her in my arms when the Vet gave her that shot. I felt her last heartbeat. I was crying so hard that his assistant had to leave the room. Her death was very peacful. She was no longer in pain. It was VERY hard to let her go, but it was the kindest gift I could give to my sweet, loving friend of so many years-- to set her free of her pain.

It doesn't matter what others might "THINK" about this situation Heather. They are't the ones who have been dealing with it, they are not the ones who have to watch Chloe getting worse every day. I think it's more cruel to keep an animal alive for selfish reasons, or worrying about what others might think, than doing what's best for the animal. Search your heart Heather. You know what needs to be done. My heart cries for the choice you must make because I've been there. If there are no other options for Chloe, Just be strong and do what must be done for her. Hugs and blessings ~~~ Tracy

Heather- I think agree that there must be something wrong with Chloe. Whether it be some issue that she is dealing with in her head, or some unknown ailment...she is not well.

She is also getting older, which means she might be starting to get something painful like hip displaysia.

If you go to the vets and let them know that you have an elderly boxer that is having incontinence issues and who also bit you the other day, they will understand. A child getting bitten and possibly scared for life is not an outcome that _any_ vet wants.

Euthanization is very humane. The dogs drift off to sleep and then their heart stops beating. It is not painful or traumatic. Each vet charges a different amount and it also depends on how you will want Chloe taken care of after wards. There is usually a Euthanization fee and a disposal fee as well. I would estimate between $50 - $100, but I am not sure since each area will have a different fee scale.

Thanks for the support ladies. I have to wait until we get paid next week, but I decided to go ahead and do it. Right now, she is living in the garage, with potty breaks and food breaks. I tried to put her a her leash to go outside and she just laid there, defiant. I could not budge her and she is 75lbs of stubborn boxer. I am a big gal but I don't have the leverage with her. She started this months ago and I kept telling hubby that something was wrong. She has had a string of uti's and I think this last one may have done her in. Do you know that look that animals get when they get old or sick, kinda look scraggly and dirty...that is how she is looking. My other problem is going to be getting her to the VET. Sheesh!!! I was just in there 2-3 weeks ago for her shots and she was ok. She has gone down hill fast this past week or 2.

Oh Heather I'm so sorry to hear about your stress!! It definitely sounds like she is in a lot of pain if she's suddenly biting.... I was a Veterinary Assistant for a while and I know that boxers tend to have a lot of major health issues later on in life.... I hope things start to get better for you!

I took her down to the river today. I had a lot of errands to run and I just don't have the money right now to do anything with her. She is tired now so hopefully she will sleep in the bathroom while I am gone. It is only about 84 out today and windy. She is getting a bath when I get home and I mixed up some rice with stock for her to eat. Darn my heart!! : )
