Hello everyone! We had out two pigs butchered on Friday and I had the mobile slaughter give me the leaf fat from the two pigs. I've been rendering this fat for about 2 days now and have more than enough for soap.
So, my question is, of all of the animals fats, I think pig is on the soft side. Has anyone made soap using pig fat as their only fat in the soap? Most recipes that I have found have a ratio of different animal fats in them. If you have, I'd be interested in knowing how the soap turned out. I am looking to make a batch of soap to grate for laundry.
Any other recipes out there that make for great laundry soap?
I posted quite some time ago with questions about milk based soap. I am happy to report that on Oct 9th, I made my very first batch of soap ever and it turned out very nice. It's a milkd based soap with dried mint from our garden, peppermint EO and menthol crystals. It only has about 2 wks left to cure and I can't wait to use it. I did learn however that I can't cut soap in a straight line to save my life! Any suggestions on cutting?

I always have used coconut oil with it...it seems soft to me, and like Karen said..dosn't lather as well as others. (beef fat is my favorite animal fat to use...makes nice hard soap!) I am real challenged in the straight cut department too..but it still works well. I tend to cut straighter on smaller bars that the great big ones. I have tried using a wire, but I am better with a knife..but I am not ordinary I am sure...

I have one of those cutters from Pampered Chef that has a black handle and a wavy blade. I bought it a few years ago to do veggies and never used it. When Missy and I did our first batch of soap I got the cutter out and it works great for soap. We just unmold the soap, mark off 1" thicknesses and cut. However, it is possible not to cut a straight line with this too if you don't go straight down. But it sure makes it easier.

Thanks for the links to the recipes! Our neighbor is having his steer processed today so I have a chance at a little fat to render from him as well. I think I will try a mixture of beef & pork fat for the soap as I still don't really know whether or not a pure pork fat soap would be good or not. Seems most people would rather use beef.
Thanks again! ![](icons/icon_smile.gif) Carla

Hi Carla, some friends and I made soap from the lard of one of their pigs. We did use some olive oil in it. It was great! We just got done doing some pure olive oil soap this week, green tea scented. OOO! It smells so good!!!!
