Hey fellow farmgirls! I haven't been around for a while. Four weeks ago, we moved from Louisville, KY to a tiny town outside Indianapolis, IN called Acton. I got a job as a Human Resources Manager and we rented a house up here from our landlord in KY (long story!) Anyway, I'm adjusting to life in the country. While we are technically in a town, our town contains exactly 8 streets and is surrounded by corn fields. The nights here are very dark! Our house is an older home with beat-up wood floors and windows that start 5 feet from the floor, meaning I can't see out of them since I am only 5'2''. We have a huge yard, a two-car garage with a lean-to, and a WHOLE lot of promise for gardens and flower beds next year. The biggest adjustment, though, has been the well water we now have. We don't have a water softener and are looking in to one. We're not sure how much they cost and since we are renting, we don't want to incur too much cost for a house that we may not live in forever. (We do have the option to buy if we so choose later down the road.) Anyway, that's my update. I am on my own little "homestead" with stinky well-water and ugly floors- but I'm happy!
How do ya'll deal with well water?

Hey Rachel, Welcome back! I'm sorry I can't help ya with the stinky well-water. My now former MIL had well-water at her place. Eewww it was just gross. I don't know if it was gross so much because of the water or if it was mostly to do with bad pipes. Her water pipes had A LOT of rust in them. I'm not sure why they were like that either.
But on the other note, your floors.... What about rugs. For your larger rooms use an area rug and throw rugs everywhere else. Or maybe even paint the floors if you can do that.

Welcome back Rachel! You could buy a refrigerator purifier such as the Brita, or call your local water purification such as Culligan. Sometimes they have a rental agreement designed for renters so you won't have to foot the bill for purification. You also might want to get your well water tested to make sure it hasn't been contaminated.

HI Rachel,
We have that stuff that makes our well water smell like nasty rotten eggs/sulphur. We use a water purifier and a water softener. When the purifier isn't doing its job just right (Im picky about how my H2O tastes) we use the bottled stuff. Your new home sounds wonderful. I can hardly wait til we get our own little homestead.

Welcome to Indiana! I am about two hours from you, depending on what side of Indy you live. Fortunately, our well water is awesome, BUT, we used to live in Parke Co., which is closer to you, and that water was nasty! I remember the first few times I would wash my hair in the shower, it never felt like the shampoo was coming out! I would rinse and rinse, but my hair still felt soapy. And the smell! We had a purifier under the sink, but I still didn't think the water tasted right. Alot of people we knew used the Culligan man. It seems like at certain times they would run specials and you could get a very reasonable price. Also, you will probably need to find a good toilet/shower/sink cleaner to get rid of the rust that comes with the water.
Other than that, your house sounds really cool! I love wood floors! And you are creative, so I am sure you will come up with something!
I forgot to mention, we bought a water softener for our house at Lowe's or Home Depot, and I think it was around $300. But it was a fairly big one, so you may be able to find smaller ones for less money. Someone may even have a service where you basically rent the machine and they service it. Maybe even Culligan, I am not sure. Good luck! |

Thanks for all your suggestions! I have seen signs for Culligan so I may call them about a softener or purifier. Right now, we have tons of bottled water to drink. I'm not as afraid of the water as I was when we first moved in...however, something still has to be done!
As far as the floors go, we have rugs down everywhere. But the edges of the rugs don't go to the wall so you can still see the paint that is all over the floors from years of neglect. Our landlord didn't have time to do the floors. He had been remodeling this house himself and I called him when I accepted the job - giving him only 2 weeks to get the walls done and the new bathroom done. Floors weren't on his radar. And that's okay because I don't have to worry about my dog messing up the floors like I did when we had carpet. We have rugs down everywhere, that's for sure!
Overall, I like it so far. We are in the farthest southeast corner of Marion County (Indianapolis) but have to drive about 8 miles to get to anything. Our town has a tiny grocery store that is very handy and their prices really aren't bad at all.
My dog, who has been a city dog most of his 9 years, heard a rooster crow the other day and looked TOTALLY concerned. He freaked out and ran inside - TOOO FUNNY!

good to hear your cyber voice miz rachel .. i think i've been through acton .. but can't remember it exactly. you will adore small town living .. i sure do! keep in touch .. and roam on down to our fun October 11/12 gurlfren gatherin' if you can find the time in your busy new schedule. i've been on well-water before and luckily it didn't taste stinky. hopefully you will figger that one out before too long. how's your young man likin' small town living? do you think you might 'settle in' for awhile there? xo

That is too funny about your dog and the rooster. He will get use to the country life soon enough. Your place sounds like fun. I am glad you are adjusting and you have this opportunity for change.

Hey Frannie! I need to keep in mind that weekend - I'd love to see you and your awesome house (not to mention your honey hunk) again! Tim is liking this small town, actually. He's trying to find a job right now, of course, and he gets lost every five minutes but he seems to like it A LOT better than Louisville. Our neighbors were nosy and disrespectful before and he can't stand that. I think we might "settle in" here. The landlord said we can buy the house if we want it and we may want it once we are both gainfully employed!
And the dog is adjusting to the roosters - he ignored it this morning and continued eating grass. We'll countrify the dog yet!

rachel darlin' .. i would adore having you come visit again! are you still makin' dollies? my MAN will be in california gathering with a bunch of his olde rugby buddies .. you need to bring that sweetie of yours here for a visit sometime too! i love being able to visit a big city for all the culture it offers (museums/great shopping/theatres, etc. etc.) but it is truly grande to be able to run 'nekked' in the country if you are so inclined .. and my honey hunk IS inclined!
i wish there were more great job opportunities here in green county .. i'd try to entice ya'll to move here .. but alas and alack .. the jobs are sorely lacking! my precious grand-daughter would love to live here . but i told her they would not have the opportunities available to them like they have in the city. (they are in delaware .. and actually live near the ocean .. her man is in construction and they are ALWAYS building something or other at the beaches!)
well, anyhoo .. it's october 11/12 (come a day early if you can .. stay a couple extra days if you can) .. we have such fun planned .. and so many wonderful 'city' and 'country' gurlfrenz to meet! xo

I live in Georgia now, but I am from just outside of Louisville (Mt. Washington). I was just up there Labor day weekend. I have a few family members that live in Thortontown (sp) in Anderson Co. They love it up there. Take care and good luck to you in adjusting to your new environment.

| Hi Rachel! I live about 4 hours north of you. 45 minutes northwest? of Fort Wayne. I had been raised in the city with good tasting water before we moved here. We drink bottled water and I think our pipes are full of yuck! We live in a 100 year old farmhouse, but I wouldn't trade the open air, cornfields, or nasty water for the city! It takes a bit but you'll adjust! |

We have fought our well water for 7 years and I think we have it licked. We had a tube filter that goes on the pipes after the pump and we have been putting rope filters in it to no avail! Our water has horrible sediment and we tried a paper filter that everyone said was not as effective and it worked a miracle. I am washing whites for the first time in years at home and our water tastes good, I saw in our ace hardware ad they had the tube on sale for 14.99. The paper filters are available in a 2 pack for under 10.00. we change them more often the three months it says but it has been a miracle. I know what you mean about the dark! we live in a dark park area ( darkest place east of Mississippi and a haven for astronomers). It is DARK out here at night!!!!!! enjoy the star show!

Oh, I just love that Laura Ingalls Wilder quote!!! That must be why Little House on the Prairie had such an influence on me as a child!!!!
Well water. We have it and thankfully, it is not stinky at all. I know of some who have really bad well water though, and I'm sorry that you have to deal with it!
My parents had a new well dug about 10 years ago. Amazing the difference in the water from the very same property. It has to be filtered now, but never had to when we were growing up.
