Ok, I know this subject has come up plenty of times Butttttt.
do you pick pears or wait until they fall from the tree? I know they have to sit in a paper bag until fully ripe. But I just don't know when to pick them. Thanks, Laura

Hi Laura!
You have to pick pears when they on the tree and underripe. Then you just let them ripen in your kitchen. When we moved to our pear orchard last November there were still pears on the trees, but they were too ripe to store for any length of time. We had to eat'em right away :)

| My Aunt had several pear trees. She said she would lift them gently and if they came off the tree easily they were ready to go. I don't know if that would be too ripe if your goal is to store them. |

| We pick them when they're the right size and then store them in paper bags/cardboard boxes until they're ripe enough that right up near the stem feels kind of soft and they're easy to peel. |

The lifting to pick is a sure sign of ready. You can also cut one open and make sure the seeds are black/brown. If they are still white, they aren't ripe yet. And yes, you just "wasted" one pear. Oh well!

Thanks for all the great info. I picked a bag full the other day to see what they would do. My neighbor came over so I gave those to her now I have to go pick some more and try again. Also my dogs keep eating the good ones on the ground.
