Hey Lani! Welcome to the farm! I use 2 tablespoons baking soda and 2 tablespoons of borax mixed together and scoop what I need. Of course I make up a large container of the stuff and then remake when I or rather my husband runs out. He does the dishes! So, I guess I mix 1 cup of each and then use as needed. Whew, that was long winded and confusing! Cheap, "green" and effective.
Give it a try! Dana

I do the baking soda and borax mix, but it would always leave a film on my dishes. Once I started adding vinegar in the little rinse aid spot, it cleared up the film.

Heather - I hadn't noticed a film before but I love the vinegar in the rinse container idea! I'll add that to my husbands arsenal at night!
Cheers, Dana

Hi Lani~
I mix up 1 cup borax and 1 cup washing soda. If your water is hard I would add a cup of baking soda as well. It takes about 2 tsp. of it per load. The original recipe I was given called for 1 tablespoon but that was too much for me in the end. I do add vinigar to the rinse agent area as well.

Although no one can go back and make a brand new start; anyone can start from now and make a brand new end.

Dana - I had heard so many good things about the borax/baking soda mix that I was surprised at the film, but it could be our water (we don't drink it because it gives us headaches) or our ancient dishwasher. Either way, the vinegar works great!

I use the 1 cup washing soda and 1 cup borax recipe as well. I also put in two packets of lemonade mix ( the Koolaid packs). I do use the vinagar in the rinse agent compartment, but I find that if I add it to the final rinse it works better. |

Sorry haven't been on in a while. Yes the Lemonade/koolaid if for the acidic acid. I guess you could use lemon juice as well. I found this recipe that I use, and it seems to work well. I just mix a big batch of the powdered recipe, so it is easy for me to use the powdered mix. I keep an antique vinagar jar on the dishwasher to remind me to put it in when the rinse cycle comes up. |

Thank you Gals!!! Dishwashing soap was on my list & now I don't have to buy it. Just more baking soda on the next trip to the store.
You are all awesome!

I mixed up a batch using castile soap, tea tree oil & that left a film on glasses & pots. Going to try using just baking soda & borax, I use vinegar in the rinse. thanks |
