My name is Kathryn and currently I reside in Louisville, KY with my husband of 12 years and four sons ages 3, 6, 8 and 10. We don't live on a farm and barely have a lot (new builders love to cram the houses in). We are hoping to buy several acres next year so the boys will have room to romp. We are also kicking around the idea of moving to Texas as most of our family lives in Oklahoma and we want to be close but not too close. 
I love things that have history and age. New things just don't have a personality. My husband is just the opposite although he is changing.
We are hoping to have solar and possibly a wind turbine in TX. Our current green project is switching over to veggie biodiesel. We have built quite the still in the garage and one of our neighbors asked us if we were running a moonshine distillery (this is KY!) or building a rocket! 
I have a subscription to MJF after having stalked it at Barnes and Noble for awhile. I just inhaled the Farmgirl book and need another now.

I'm new from the Adirondack mtns...I am totally off the grid, and run a horse stable....we use solar and are now setting up a wind mill to compensate the for the bad weather (we hope) with the brutal winters we have up here, we heat with wood stoves and it couldn't be toastier...I would not have it any other way....

Welcome from Texas! Happy you are here. Where in Texas are you considering moving too? I live in the Texas Hill Country and it is a wonderful place to live! We lived in Owensboro, KY 30 years ago. My husband was in the Coast Guard and had to go up river to Louisville all the time. Nice part of the country.

| We were looking at Northern Dallas (not really in Dallas). We really like Rockwall because the schools are good and there is still land instead of tiny lots. I grew up in Oklahoma City and swore I would never live in that area again because of the heat. Kids miss their family though. |

Hey Kathryn! It's so nice to meet you!
I just caught a thing on tv the other day about how to make the bio-diesel fuel.
It was on this show my guy likes to watch.
They usually make big mud trucks, but that day they dedicated the show to bio-diesel.
I'm really not a car nut but that was really interesting and they made it look so easy.

I am also new here.
My husband likes new things while I like everything that is old. He kids that we will one day have a house where one side is Little House on the Prarie and the other is high tech.
I don't live on a farm yet either but it is my dream to some day live in the country.

I live in MI, but if our house sells, we will be relocating to Louisville (possibly Oldham County). I used to live in Tulsa, OK (for college), and my sister in law lives in Dallas. How funny is that -- based on where you lived, live and hope to live!
This is a fun site with alot of great farm chicks - on land or in heart.

Hello Kathryn, that's my very favorite name. What a family you have. Goodness, I bet your busy.
I'm with you on the old stuff. I always said that's why I married my husband! He's 10 years older. But ya can't find good new stuff anymore. Especially houses. They seem to be thrown together in just a few weeks anymore. Ours was built the year my hubby was born, '48. It's a stone house and the man who built it did not intend for it to fall down .

I am very much interested in the Turbines as an off the grid alternative to being "tethered" to the power companies....I see that Texas is #1 in Turbine/solar use and Calif is #2 & Washington#3.
So keep us posted on what you plan to do.
Oh & have fun w/your Bio-diesal "stil" lol!

Welcome Kathryn from another Kentucky girl. I am about 100 south of Louisville in Green Co. (Ms. Frannie's territory!!!)
My husband (of 39+ years) have always loved the "old". We redid an old farmhouse (should have dozed it down!!) and have collected antique furniture all these years. We live on his grandparents farm, and would like to pass it down someday, but none of our 3 daughters seems interested. Maybe a grandchild will take an interest in keeping the place going and in the family. I do not like to see farms sold off and broken up into plots.
Hope you get to where you want to go--nothing like being happy with your surroundings.

Welcome Kathryn- I'm new, too. I know you don't have a large lot, but a book I read turned me into a gardener (we live on 1/2 acre, and most of it is taken up by either house or trees and the best backyard with the softest green grass EVER!). It's called All New Square Foot Gardening. I have a 9yo boy myself, and he is my future farmer. It gave him such a great sense of accomplishment to dig up potatoes that he had planted himself in the spring. Oh you should have seen how excited he was when plant after plant turned up big potatoes! Oh the JOY! Anyway, it might be a little taste of farm until you can get where you want to be, and the skills you pick up will help you when you get there.

Welcome Kathryn from the pacific NW. My DH loves new stuff too. I prefer flagstone, he concrete. I prefer lots of different plants and plantings, he likes lawn(bleck)with nothing to trim around,LOL
