i am enjoying everything i read .. be it 'strictly farm' talk .. or good girlfriend gossip .. getting to know each other and sharing our stories. for .. 'what is a farm .. without it's people'? i believe that all aspects of 'us' are the threads that make up the fabric of our lives .. on or off the farm. i do not believe that our 'laundry' should always be washed in public ... nor do i believe that 'mean-spirited' thoughts or feelings should ever be shared (on line or in person!) probably more controversial subjects should be avoided .. yep! those dreaded 'religion and politics' opinions/beliefs are best left to sharing in person with those we love. i do like the 'farmgirl' aspect of subjects posted .. but, am not interested in all of them . in which case, my little 'mouse' has the option to click or not click. (probably wouldn't read about pig poo disposal or creative uses for cow chips) .. but isn't that the beauty of living in a free country! I have a wonderful wooden flag hangaing on our wall that reads: It is wonderful that in America we have freedom of speech. It is equally wonderful there are no laws that require us to listen to it." so, keep rambling girlfriends ... i'm enjoying it all.

The plan, until this morning, was to have Stitching Room Workbook #1 come out in the early Spring and then Farm Kitchen WB#1 in the Fall. But now my publisher is talking about combining them into one book that would come out in the Fall. I'm not big on the idea. We shall see! But it's nice to be done for a while and have my life back. It's been a lot like having a crying baby in the next room--impossible to ignore! I wish you all could see them right this minute. Carol, Erik, Anna, Julie Beck and Julie Bell are creative geniuses. The photos, recipes, and patterns are beautiful, beautiful.

I am jumping in here with big (((hugs))) for Clare to thank her for taking up the slack when I went in for surgery and keeping all our wonderful new friends up to date on the forum etiquette. My busy life has kept me from being able to get to the forum on a daily basis and I too want her to know how much she is appreciated.
Thank you Mary Jane for getting on board to give us some much needed encouragement and some assistance with the moderation. It is a full time job now, if we take it seriously, with the huge influx of wonderful new friends here now that your first book has found its way into so many new hands. With two more due to come out soon it will grow even more I am sure. Every day I meet people who are hungry for this life style and this knowledge that has been almost lost, so they are serching for a place to come for input, a place to begin to learn about all the things we are talking about here.
I am so glad we will have help keeping things in an understandable order.
Eileen

Hello everyone!
We're planning on starting on our next magazine soon, now that we've finished our Stitching Room workbook. The latest plans have it on the shelves in February. Of course, since we do all photography, writing, and design here at the farm for all our projects, that is always open to change, depending on how the book projects are coming. Stay tuned!

Mary Jane and the gals...I have to say that you all definitely keep us all yearning for more farmgirl knowledge. Every chance I get I curl up on the couch and thumb through the pages of the magazines and of the book. I'm always reminded of my childhood and of what is yet to come in my life. It is good to hear that the Stitching Room Workbook and Farm Kitchen is done and the magazine is in progress. You are definitely an excellent representative of the farm life and how things should be in life...nice and simple!

Keep up the good work!

I'll jump in with some ideas:

Natural Decorations:
Wreaths (grapevine, bittersweet, nuts, greens, herbs);
Trees -- harvesting from the farm, CharlieBrown-style trees, etc.;
Gathering willowbranches, redtwig dogwood & incorporating into porch displays

Gifts:
Gifts from the Farm/Garden -- herbs, etc.; canned items; jams & jellies; chutneys

Gifts from the Kitchen -- (somewhat duplicates above) also breads, cookies, candies, spiced nuts, etc.

Gifts from the Sewing Room -- crochet & knit items; (Christmas) quilts & throws -- pieced or other; (Thanksgiving/Christmas) runners, tablecloths & napkins; guest towels; kitchen towels, dishcloths, potholders, trivets

Gifts for the Animals -- recipes for dog treats, catnip toys (I'm not a farmer -- what do you give a cow?? A new cowbell?)

Old-fashioned readings -- for community events -- also old-fashioned seasonal songs

Establishing family traditions -- Ideas for bringing generations together -- could include topics for multi-generational sharing (Describe your earliest memory; What is your favorite food from childhood?) Also geneology topics?

Maintaining your roots -- holiday foods from different countries; treasured recipes from MaryJane staff?

I'm just musing here, as I make dinner . . . .

I'd LOVE to see and hold a old fashioned primer for old fashioned holiday fare, recipes, crafts, cookie swaps, traditions shared by farmgirls, entries to be filled out as keepsakes, farm kitchens decked out, herbal remedies as gifts, folklore, homemade gifts, interviews with farm girls, just a old fashioned book! Christmas has gotten so commerical, I'm afaird my grandkids won't know how the holiday used to be shared. If anyone can do it, it's you!

These ideas are fantastic. I just love the creativity of farmgirls! It makes me want to drop everything and get started on every one of Katie's ideas. Actually, I've had my son working on Christmas ornaments made from cans for about six months now. He has about 40 made. Meg and I were able to show them off on a Seattle TV station last month. And we've been playing with some ornaments made from spoons. But that's as far as we've gotten with our idea of a hand-made Christmas, but Katie, you just filled up the rest of our next "Make It Easy" book. And Patricia, YES! write up one of her ideas and send it my way. Katie, I'll make sure I dedicate the book to you!

Hi girls. Here's a perfect example of a post going off-topic. While this post started on the Farmgirl Posse topic, it now is about book ideas. So I'm going to copy it into a new post over in the Book Ideas forum at http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=84&whichpage=9. If you want to reply to MaryJane's post, click on the above link first, then when we go to find book ideas later, they'll all be in one place!

Thanks to all!
Carol

Mary Jane and her staff....I have no idea what goes into getting a book together, written and then published. If you do decide to do a primer, we will be patient and have something to look forward to, however......I want the first copy :)

Thank you to Clare for all your hard work of keeping up with everything, don't know how you do it. Happy to hear from Ms.MJ and crew and there will be some help with this moderation. Most thankful for all the colorful people sharing their lives on this forum. It's a wonderful place to be, wouldn't change it for anything.

I love the idea of the Farmgirl holiday workbook! I can almost see it in my mind, just how it would look and feel. Don't forget to have some simple ideas for making holiday greeting cards and wrapping gifts!
Oops, sorry.....I am taking this subject off track again! I posted in the wrong place.
