i'm loving the subject of the sayings we catch ourselves using! do any of you know the origins of some of these sayings?

i know "mind your P's and Q's" had something to do with colonial times and pubs and the selling of "pints and quarts" .. i'll have to look it up to get more on this saying.

and:" GOODNIGHT, SLEEP TIGHT .. DON'T THE THE BEDBUGS BITE .. came from "rope beds" (they had to be 'tightened' .. and the bedbugs were in the straw filled tickings that mattresses were filled with.

tell us about some of the ones you know of. xo

"Brand Spanking New"....Drs. traditionally spanked babies after delivery to start them crying and breathing.

"Break A Leg".....My understanding is it is sourced in superstition. It is a wish of Good Luck, but the words wish just the opposite. Originated from Midieval reverse psychology. Traditional to say to someone who is acting in a play before going on stage.

"Running around like a chicken with it's head cut off"

I used to hear that when chickens were killed they would run around headless for a while...is this true??

I still find myself saying that. LOL

Linda - Sadly, yes. I watched my dad take an axe to one of our chickens and it did run headless. Horrible, horrible, horrible. My brothers and I thought it would be funny, but no, it wasn't.

Here's one- A Drop in the Bucket-
Meaning - A very small proportion of the whole.

Origin - From the Bible, Isaiah 40:15 (King James Version):
"Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing."

Frannie- I still say "Good night, sleep tight..." to my kids when they go to bed. My mom and dad would say it to us every night. My dad also you used to say, "It's dark under the table, time to go to bed." One time he told us it was time to go to the Land of Winken, Blinken and Nod and my brother and I went and got our coats! We were ready for a trip. You can imagine our disappointment when we found out we had to go to bed. lol
