Hello Farmgirls!

I would like to make a scarecrow with my kids this fall but am not sure how to go about it. The supplies I assume would be old clothing, straw, rope or string, a couple of poles for supports. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks!
Jenny

Welcome Jennifer! I've never made one either but I think you take a broom and lash another pole crosswise on the handle. Then just dress it with an old flannel shirt and overalls stuffed with straw. Add a floppy hat on top and you've got yourself a scarecrow!

Hopefully someone who has experience will fill us both in if I'm wrong!

Jennifer,
This is sort of a sophisticated pattern, but you can simplify it... like I did!

I used and old broom handle and ran it through the shirt and one pants leg. I really stuffed the rest of it so it was sturdy enough to stand. I stuck a pumpkin through the top of the broom handle for the head. Other times they just didn't have heads - i just tird a hat at the top.

I made three a couple of years ago, still have them too. For each, 1 board, 2x2 for the body, then a shorter one for the arms. Made a small t shape and screwed them together at an angle. I bought a strofoam pumpkin head at Big Lots, thy're the chepest I found, carved out faces for all, dressed them in clothes I bought from the goodwill. My lady waers a straw hat and a dress, that I need to replace this year, I have a man and a kid wearing overalls. BTW, my heads still look great even after letting them cook in the garden in the sun and I leave them out most of the winter in the rain and snow.

DD loves making scarecrows for the yard. We use 2 1x2's nailed or screwed into a cross. Then we dress it with old clothes. Sometimes we go to the thrift and look over the super sale bins. We've found some really fun stuff. One year we had a lady scarecrow with gloves, hat and a dress - very cute. Somethings you can staple gun to the wood. Things like pants can be tied with rope to look like suspenders.

If I remember right the upright piece was 5 or 6 feet and the cross piece (which makes the arms) was about 3 feet.

Very easy and fun. Your kids are gonna love it.

A few years ago I made a strawless scarecrow (spur of the moment project). I hot glued a pair of outgrown childrens overalls to a pair of high top canvas sneakers. Then I stuffed the feet and legs with newspapers before tucking a little flannel shirt into the overalls and stuffing it tight to hold it in place. A stuffed pillowcase in an over sized hat made the head and an old pair of gloves the hands. I set it on the front steps and countless people mistook it for the child's who's closet I had just cleaned out!

What we write today slipped into our souls some other day when we were alone and doing nothing.

Too funny...I did the exact same thing years ago and everyone who drove by thought it was the gentleman that sold us the house! I have to admit..."Jack" the scarecrow did resemble the gentleman quite a bit! Round head...what can I say?

I found a source for straw the other day - an import in these parts. I think it is going to cost me $20 for a small bale. Oh well, it will be a fun, wholesome, outdoorsy activity for us all! Now, to get my husband to rip me some lumber of the right size. I can manage the chainsaw, but the chainsaw mill is a little too much machine for me. :)

Thanks for all the brilliant suggestions and stories! I'll be sure to post a picture once we've created our scarecrow(s).

I use burlap for the head and place a floppy hat on it..secured with a couple of big hidden safety pins!

Until Later,
