We got a good laugh last night when a contractor came to look at replacing our gutters. I planted a lot of bulbs around the front of the house last fall, and the squirrels went crazy digging them up. I had flowers this spring, but I figured the squirrels had eaten about half of them. Well, not quite, as it turns out.
The gutter contactor pointed out that our gutters were mostly nice and clean except for one spot above the front of the house where there was a bunch of greenery growing. "Those are awfully big plants to be in a gutter," he said. "Yeah," said my husband, peering up. "They almost look like..." And here's where I realized what had happened: "My daffodils!"
Silly squirrels! They took them away but they didn't get to eat them. When we get the gutters replaced, I'm going to make sure I get those bulbs back so I can replant them. |

That's hysterical...and also maddening, isn't it?
Those darn squirrels--they eat my birdseed (even with chili pepper in it) and dug up all my spring bulbs, too...now they're starting on my tomatoes. If I didn't have such a soft spot for animals, I might hurl a tennis ball or two at them!!!

You can keep the squirrels from digging up your bulbs if you lay chicken wire on the ground after planting them. The flowers will grow right up through the wire and the squirrels can't dig through it! This also works to keep cats from digging and leaving their calling cards in your flower beds (gross!).

Thanks for the tip, Lisa. Last year I ended up laying some small flat rocks over the freshly dug ground. That seemed to discourage the squirels too. |

Amie: That's funny! The armadillos dig up by bulbs, and the squirrels plant trees where I would never want a tree! LOL Marly |
