Wasn't it incredible?! My dh said they spent $350,000,000. on it. The choreography was awesome. Just think of a cheerleading squad and how hard they work to be in unison and then think of the 2008 drummers and all the dancers that were in sync! Talk about practice, practice, practice!!!

Dance like no one is watching!

~~~I'd have to say SPECTACULAR!! I think this is the best I've seen for Olympic Openings!! Enjoyed all of it....Was amazed that the box synchronization was done by people inside and not technologically done! China probably worked on this effort for YEARS! ~~~
hank kept telling me that 'people' were in those boxes .. and i said: ABSOLUTELY NO WAY!!!!! wowzer! was i ever in 'shock and awe' .. when they popped out.
the announcer during the show said the world can just hang up the 'trophy' for olympic openings .. it will stay in CHINA! i cannot even fathom any country ever doing anything as spectactular! HOWEVER .. the site of Muhammed Ali running the torch .. will forever remain my most favorite! xo
I just posted this on another topic. my favorite part was the little boy that marched in leading the China team along with Mo. He survived the earthquake then saved 2 of his classmates. What an honor for him to get to lead the China team.
I Was thinking last night that they were outside, but my Hubby filled me in on the 91,000 people capacity Stadium they built called the Birds Nest.....the commentators kept mentioning it was like 85 degrees .... I guess it doesn't have air conditioning!!!! YIKES!!! How did they dance in those elaborate costumes in all the heat?!!
Also, last night the commentators mentioned that half of the population of China only makes a couple of dollars a day...OH MY GOSH!!!!!..... no wonder they could build So Much because of the large work force they can get so cheaply!!!.......... and even at that it cost 30-40 Billion dollars for the Olympic Venue there (buildings, etc. )!! They have spent more then any other country has ever spent and they don't think anyone else will ever be able to equal it! It is always interesting to me to get the cultural perspective!!
Until Later,
Audrey
~~~just wanted to add that I do think it is an AMAZING VENUE that they have created for all the Olympic Events, but do think it is Sad that the majority of the people there work so hard for Soooo Little pay!!!

We indeed need to count our Blessings!

Audrey

The Chinese government has lots of money, our money(we buy their stuff) and they don't have to pay any out for health care or bailing out savings and loans and a lot of other good stuff that our government does for us. That is why they can afford to put on a show like that. I know there has been lots of time in the past where countries or cities, or states that have went way in debt to host the games.

The stadium was an "open air" stadium. I heard there were 15000 DIFFERENT performers in the ceremony!

as i watched all those people from all those countries (some of which i had never even heard of!) .. i thought about what a very large population this world has .. all these different cultures, beliefs, religions, lives! oh my .. it is overwhelming .. but i do love to see and try to understand other cultures.

it reminded me of the time i was standing on our deck in the mountains of colorado looking out at the ba-ka-ma-ja-zillions of stars! i was with my brother .. and told him how very 'insignificant' a single person is in the realm of it all ... he told me yes .. with my eyes open. then he told me to close my eyes .. (i did) .. he asked what i saw. i told him 'nothing' .. and he reminded me that without ME .. nothing else exists. WOWZER .. was that ever 'food for thought'. (of course, i know that all those worlds would still be out there .. that all the 'beings' would still be here .. but "I" became the most important thing in the world of worlds at that very moment.

I was awed but not surprised. My company outsources a lot of the work that I was doing a year ago to Chinese companies (computer coding and other things like that). They are smart, disciplined, incredibly hard-working people. There's a reason they are taking so many of our jobs! I should be participating in a phone conference with some of them in a few weeks. We don't chit-chat much during these meetings because the language barrier and not being able to see each other (multiple people talking into the same phone at both ends) makes it hard, but I'll try to find out what they thought.

The torch lighting was spectacular. I'm not usually impressed by big productions like this, but it was quite beautiful. I loved the backdrop of glowing lights in the crowd. Vancouver will have to go a long way to equal it in 2010.

The little boy with the flags almost made me cry. The announcer said that he freed himself from the rubble of his school, where 2/3 of his class had been killed, and went back in to save 2 classmates. Why did he go back in? Because he was a hall monitor and took that leadership responsibility seriously.

amie .. while working in D.C. .. i saw first-hand many new immigrants to this country (mostly asian) .. and a harder-working group of people i never did see!

i don't understand their government-workings .. but i do understand that they work long and hard hours and make very little money. it's no wonder so many come to America .. the land of opportunity .. if you are willing to work hard and work your way from bottom to top. so many 'doctors' .. 'lawyers' .. and other professionals have come to this country and started out in menial jobs .. some to eventually work their way to their previous position .. or in a business where they make a lot of money.

i know a sweet man from india .. who was a professional with higher education than most americans achieve .. he came here and found that he could not get the jobs he was qualified for .. soooo .. he started his own business and is now a millionaire importer. he has his wares made in india .. shipped to america and sold here!

and we buy them because we can get them for much less than most american-made. which of course, saddens me .. i do try desperately to 'buy american' when i can!

xo
