Garden Gate:  What will be growing inside this winter?  |

I will have lots of plants inside this winter to help counter act the nasty off-gassing that all homes do. Especially since I know this house has been painted at least once a year for several years (rental) and has new carpet.
Currently I have:
A large peace lily
A medium to large Asparagus fern
I will have:
6 baby Curling willow trees growing in a 10 gallon bucket
a green and white variegated ivy
a green climbing ivy that I harvested a cutting from the alley.
I just bought a stand with two stainless steel washbasins. I am contemplating lining them with plastic and then planting the two ivy varieties in them for the winter. I want to tack up some chicken wire over my huge window in my living room which only looks into my sewing room and train the ivies to clime the chicken wire. I think that would be so pretty!
I am also going to start my tomatoes in side around February and probably many more things- lettuce, chard, kale, bush beans, peas- the sky is the limit!
I think the house will be much more homey if I have lots of green growing things- and the air will be better quality as well!
So what are you going to grow this winter?

LOL! StarMeadow, you crack me up! Although the Solviva greenhouse people had tomato plants that grew and produced for many years!

I'd love to grow things inside. In Louisiana, we don't have much of a winter. Things continue to grow almost all year. And, I have 7 cats. My cats tear apart any growing plant I put in the house. I found out the hard way! I can't even put a living Christmas tree up! LOL

Hi Alee! I currently have living on my patio a large mother-in-law tongue, a huge schefflera, a huge gardenia, a normal sized arrowhead, a cyclamen I've had for over 10 years and two others who's names escape me. These lucky plants all get to spend the summer outside and they love it. All will be coming inside once the weather starts to get cold. I remember back in the day we used to grow spider plants and bridal veil ferns and I'd like to get a couple of those also.
I also have 2 purple african violets in my kitchen and I'd like to get some pink ruffled edged ones.
Hubby and I hope to get a greenhouse (MJ plan) put together so we can continue some veggies during the early winter and be able to get everything started earlier for next season.

I am with Marly on this one-my cat eats any plant she can get ahold of. My indoor plants are not that many, but in the green house ther will be lettuce, spinach, radishes, cabbage, and maybe a few peas. I do bring my orange tree into the house from the greenhouse, and it actually has oranges on it this year!

I have two large pots of cherry tomatoes. They each have 3 plants in them. They are the only tomatoes that have set this year, so far and they have lots more blooms. I think I'll only bring in one for the winter. I was considering digging up a couple of peppers to bring inside, too. I can't bring in too many things from outside. My house plants already take up every window in the house. I keep telling dh I need more windows. But he keeps telling me he doesn't want to live in a greenhouse!

The only plants I can grow in the house are succulents. Give me a cactus cause it'll be death for the rest...so sad... Oh wait, I forgot, I do have this viney thing on top of the bookcase in the dining room...hmmmmmm....maybe that's why they all croak (the "I forgot" thing).... You know I managed to even kill a "good luck" bamboo plant in my office. I'm hopeless! |

| we are going to attempt to complete the growing of at least one tomato plant! our cabin is VERY small and we heat with wood so not sure how it will work. other than that we will be continuing to grow our parrots and our 16 yr old son *grin* peace connie in alaska |

Looks like I will be adding a honey suckle to that list. I thought I had killed it, but it is putting out leaves- poor thing. I think it needs the winter to recover!

I've got 8 regular houseplants. I only sought out one of them - a large spider plant that I grew from a clipping from my dad's huge spider plant. He got that plant the same year I was born, I think, as a clipping from a friend's office.
The others I seem to inherit. I literally took home an african violet and a shamrock to help my friend clean out after his mother died. And a large jungly-looking doctor's office type plant was rescued from the curb when my mil's neighbor went into the hospital for cancer treatment. My Christmas cacti are grown from clippings that would have gone in the trash at work.
I've grown lettuce on my windowsill during the winter in the past. This year I think I'll concentrate on sprouting. |

I have tons of houseplants. Many have a sentimental attachment. The cornplant giving to my mother by my grandparents, the day I was born (45 years ago), the begonia my dad grew from seed, the plant that was neglected at a friends veterinary hospital for many years.
Our house has lots of south facing windows, so I get a lot of sunshine most of the day. Succulents, Cactus, ficus tree, begonia, african violets. I love to rescue desperate plants from friends before they hit the garbage, then nurse them back to health. The plants will soon take over the whole house.
I brought in geraniums as stock plants. I have taken cuttings and I hope they are rooting. I brought in two banana trees. My favorites are begonias, african violets, and geraniums. I plan to try growing lettuce even if they are only micro greens. I enjoy sprouting. I want to grow geraniums from seed this year. I'll let you know what survives the winter and what I accomplish growing indoors.

Oh my! I love houseplants. Being stuck in an apartment, I really have no other place for a garden, so houseplants have become my garden. We are actually lucky to have the entire first floor of an old Victorian house with HUGE south facing windows. I currently have
2 pots of ponytail plants, One of which my grandmother bought for me about a year before she died (she died in 1991)
1 large Jade plant which I rescued from Home Depot as a scraggly little plant about 9 years ago
1 mother in law's tongue which is struggling to survive
1 pineapple plant that my sister gave me years ago as a pup off the parent plant
1 large bromeliad that I don't know the name of
1 Christmas Cactus that I started from a cutting that I stole from my mother's plant 20 years ago (my very first houseplant)
4 other Christmas Cacti that I have inherited from here and there, 3 of which are currently in full bloom
2 baby spider plants
1 baby asparagus fern
2 Aloe plants that were given to me by a former employer
4 African violets rescued from my mother
1 philodendron vine
1 oak leaf ficus
1 very small weeping ficus
1 schefflera
3 pots of clipping taken from the jade plant
and 3 plants I currently cannot identify
Needless to say, I cannot get to my living room windows! LOL

| I used to have tons of house plants but got a little tired of cleaning under and around them. The only plants I have now is one from my Daddy's funeral and one from Ole Ron's mother's funeral. I have one aloe vera for treating burns. I have several pots of Red Shield Hybiscus that I took cuttings befor frost. Love the plant but can't buy it here. I also stuck a pineapple top in a pot last summer and it took root so I brought it in. I still have a couple of plants that are in the potting shed that I don't know what to do with. Don't want them but can't just kill'um. One is a Christmas Cactus and it is about to bloom. I may have to find it a pot and bring it in for christmas. Oh, I forgot, I brought in last Christmas' pointsetta. It don't look so good. May not make it. |
