How cool, we got our first egg yesterday too. I fried it up this morning along with my store eggs and it was delish. Smaller than the store eggs but delish! YAY for chickens who pay rent!!

Hi Beverly- I have one Plymouth Barred Rock, two Rhode Island Reds and two Buff Orpingtons. It is one of the Buffs that laid the egg. (I'm thinking Hazel) I cracked it open this morning to add it to my pancake batter and the yolk was the most fabulous color of orange-yellow. The eggs from the store (organic) paled in comparison. I cannot wait for egg #2. :)

How WONDERFUL!!! Just wait though, pretty soon those ladies will be laying so many eggs, you won't know what to DO WITH THEM! When I had mostly Domniques in my flock (FABULOUS birds!) I was getting 36 eggs A DAY!!! I didn't even think I had that MANY chickens! I had to give them away (the eggs that is-- not the chickens!), I just couldn't keep up. Right now I get about 4-6 a day from my adult hens. (Only one Dominique left in the flock-- I lost almost all my birds to raccoons this year and had to start over) My younger girls should start laying any time now, although, they might ALREADY be doing so and I just haven't been paying attention. Enjoy Karin. Hugs ~~~ Tracy

I have 4 black either sex-linked or black autrolorps. probably spelled that wrong. but they had the 2 kinds intogether when I bought them so I am not sure which I have. But they are still a little young to lay eggs so I am waiting for my first ones too. Can someone tell me what kind of hen houses or tractors they have that were really easy to make. My husband always says he will make them but never seems to get around too it so I need a really easy one to get him in the mood.!!!! hehehehehehe Thanks Beverley

that sight has good pictures and I think a few directions on how to make the houses. You can go from super easy (a bucket and some wire) to really super fancy!
