Hello,
My name is Carli and I am 22 and the mother of 3. My husband and I live in Kansas and have all our lives(accept for the year we lived in Tennessee). My mother gave me an issue of Mary Janes Farm magazine recently. I instantly fell in love!!!!! I think I've read it 20 times!!! I love everything about Mary Janes magazine and website and books! It has inspiried my husband and myself to get back to the simple life ( as much as is possible in 2008) We would like to start a small farm and live out in the country. No one has faith in my husband and I. They don't think we can raise any kind of livestock eventhough both sides of our family is made up of farmers. THey don't think we can grow vegetables, or live out any of our dreams! I fell like Mary Jane has faith in me. If any one has suggestions on how to get started, please let me know!

Welcome Carli!

Don't let the naysayers keep you from your dreams. You'll find lots of support and friendship here.

My dream is to also move to the country and have a small farm :)

Hi Carli! Welcome to the MJ Forum! I'm 20, we're close in age! I definitely think you and your family should start a farm! What a great idea! That is what I want to do as soon as I'm done with school. I want to raise alpacas and spin there fleece into yarn. I also want chickens and such. Anyways, I'm sure you'll love it here!

Welcome Carli!! Hey..if I can do what I do, I know you can too!
My advice...start with chickens and a garden...the easiest farm animals to raise for sure.
You will get so much support from the sisterhood here...these gals are awesome. I learn things every single day..and I am more than twice your age. We were all once where you are right now though...I am glad you found us..it will be fun to get to know you and to cheer all your sucesses!!

THanks everyone. How do I find out if I am able to have chickens where I live. I am right outside our city limits, but am not sure if I am allowed to raise chickens here. Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions.

Howdy and Welcome from SW Idaho! It's great to have ya aboard!

As far as the family, let 'em talk. The day you start bringing them the fresh vegies is the day their eyes will bug out!!

As far as the chickens, check with the zoning folks of your area. The info might also be online. Trying googling your location with the term "zoning regulations" and see what happens. That's how I found mine. If you're real close to the city limits, you might also want to check to see if you are in a future annexation area. Around here they are referred to as impact areas and once the city annexs the property, that individual's zoning situation can change.

Have fun and start small!

You can take the farmer's daughter off the farm but you can't take the farm out of the farmer's daughter!!

Hi Carli, welcome from a new farmgirl from FL. Do your research and count the cost before you start your dream and then you can make it a success.
